Replica Sti Front lip

Postby TristosMaximus » Fri Jul 17, 2009 11:22 pm

Hi all,
I am sick of the expensive prices for parts (mainly the freight component) from Japan and the US.
So later this year i plan to make a replica STI front lip for my 09 Lib 2.5i and various different versions of it (just so i dont get sued for copyright lol).
I have a mate who owns a moulding and casting shop so i have no shortage of different materials at my disposal!
I would like to experiment with the following materials for the finished products:
-Fibreglass
-Carbon Fibre
-Polyurethane resin (is light, stiff yet flexible under forcefull pressure)
-or a combo of these

On very rough calculations i think i could make these for round the $450 mark (but don't quote me on that!) ;)

Just wanting peoples opinions/suggestions on this
Who knows, if it works well i might try other parts as well.

Thanks Guys and Gals

Tristan

Good luck! There's always an interest in cheaper alternatives! However you should make one for yourself, post pics, and then ask for expressions of interest. People will be interested but won't seriously commit until they see something produced.

Hi Tristan,
If you can make them out of polyurethane (ie same as the factory bumpers, lips, etc) , have the correct texture, perfect fitment, good quality control, etc for around the price you estimated, i thinks you'd have some interest.

But the question is if its going to be worth the moulding costs for you and your friend to break even or even turn a profit from this project?

I would not buy a fiberglass (FRP /GRP) or carbon fiber lip that sits under the front bumper.

Also, if you plan to kinda redesign them, i think a lip that sticks out less but is more rounded off/ down would look nice.

Ha ha ha, I picked that up too. Any chance you can produce a more humble sig block (size wize) so we don't only get 3 posts per page.

I'd love to get a lip on my 05 N/A 2.5, but it all comes down to cost. Any rough estimate of a price range?

not sure yet, with very "rough" calculations im hoping to do it for under $450. Should have a better idea within the next 2 weeks.

Not sure if I missed something or not, but bare in mind the OP's car is a post facelift model, so the lips won't fit your car. Unless he's somehow producing lips for different models.
