I would prefer not to book into a place for lunch. I reckon a bakery stop and coffee
at King Lake might be all that's needed. I do want to spend some cash up there.

Stop in Kinglake for a coffee, and again in Healesville for lunch.
It'll take us a bit under an hour to get to Kinglake from Doncaster, and comes after a lot of twisty roads, so there'll be a bit to chat about.
If it's still there, this cafe has pretty good coffees (I stopped there on 2-Jan when we went up to pick some berries.)
It's over the road from the servo and restaurant that burned down, but I think this block of shops survived.
The bakery is right next door, which also does coffees.

The last thing I'd be looking for is 2 kids <9yo and a wife with full stomachs in my car. They survived the last run on an empty tum.
