Go in there knowing the absolute most you are prepared to spend and be willing to walk if you dont hear the numbers you want to hear.
I walked into my Subaru dealership when i brought the rexy with a figure in mind. The sales manager laughed at me when i first said what i wanted, but after some solid negotiating i got the car for the figure i was thinking. 7K less than the normal RRP+On roads price and i got 3500 more than they thought my car was worth, so i walked away pretty happy.
Stick to your guns and be prepared to walk, a salesman who see's you hop up and head for the door usually will chase you and tell you he might be able to do something and they usually can.
Most important thing to know is, what cars are going for on the market, ring around the dealers and find out what stock they have and what they have on the cars. This will work for both the trade in and working on negotiating the new car price down.
Last but not least dont be impulsive, if your not 100% happy there is nothing wrong with walking out the door and saying ill think about it, the car will be there tomorrow despite what the dealer will tell you and purchasing a car will be the second most expensive purchase you will ever make after a house or business.
