Maybe for less resonance with similar restriction? Dunno

Phat said he just wants to control noise as much as possible. Blacknwhite's setup only has 1 resonator as well, and it still sounds relatively quiet on the inside. Guess Phat just wants to take that added step since it'll add to the cost but not decrease performance.

[quote="GTSPECB STI"]I would be very interested in knowing the reason for having two resonators in the centre pipe? The 3" centre pipe I had fabricated has only one resonator as you can see here. Two resonators make it more expensive but for what added benefit?

quote]

As arith stated, the 2 resonators a used to keep the sound down and to also provide similar capacity to the oem muffler, this system is not just for the sake of the sound, but really for the performance gains due to the increased flow.
The reason behind the increased cost is not really the extra resonators but for mandrel bend of single pipe for centre pipe and the detail being engineered in to how the centre pipe will be blended into the y pipe without restricting the flow.
Not a soobi anymore, but still slightly dirty

I must be missing something.

How does adding an additional resonator in the centre improve flow and performance?

Also to give you an idea on costs my exhaust fabricator charged me $450 for 3" s/s pipe using mandrel bent bends and tig welds. Job took him 3 hours he said. That price included the s/s resonator.
i think what they are saying Dave is that the extra resonator won't restrict flow any further and that they are chasing close to factory sound levels. Also i'd be assuming but since Phat is talking of using a jig, the pipe will be mandrel bent as one sEction instead of joining many bends with welding. (small but nice difference ). that and the y-pipe work are probably where the cost is

Two resonators in series gives a large reduction in noise with no impact (+ve or -ve) in flow. Straight through mufflers are louder than baffled mufflers, but they flow better (quality being equal).

Hence, to achieve maximum flow with acceptable noise, you go for two resonators in series and straight through mufflers over a single resonator and baffled mufflers.

I'm not sure about two resonators and baffled mufflers, but I don't think that's what you were asking. If you want maximum performance with minimum noise, Phat's setup is the ideal.

Yep, it's a straight through. around 2.5" inlet immediately separating to a pair of 2.5"

Resonators add pipe edges and diameter changes.

This creates turbulence (which is why the noises are reduced).

This (turbulence) REDUCES laminar air flow, which acts as back-pressure in the exhaust and as a result makes the removal of hot air harder.

It's probably fair to note though that a 3" exhaust is overkill for the power levels in use on the majority of cars on this forum (at least from the mid or Y section back) so the turbulence will occur, just not impact as much.

(and now waits for the hail of criticism  )

emissions as in noise or gas components? If it's noise, the HiTechs won't pass, hell a lot of stock systems don't manage the numbers achieved in official ADR/EPA compliance tests.
