The President is dead!
It was conking out after 20 minutes.
Diagnosis from John and Sam: faulty crank/cam angle sensor in the distributor.

A little googling and wikipedia on the H252...
Got us an engine code: Y44E...
Which led to a Yahoo.jp parts search...
Leading me to a Y44E distributor for sale, that had a pic of the underside...
Showing a part number...
Image

Which led to a Factory Service Manual in Russian (and Japanese) allowing us to confirm it was the right part...
Image

Which led to:
Image

A box from http://www.jessestreeter.com...
Image
Including a replacement grille...

Image
And a s/h dizzy!

Image
Spot of refurb fun with the Dremel...

Then the task of driving the conky Pres from the city to Little Sam's garage in Collingwood...

Hello Benny,
Liking the president! Good to see people taking the time to still keep these things going! I own the lowrider president in the UK and sourcing parts is a nightmare! If you need any info or help with the car give me a shout, I know these cars quite well and have a few contacts who can source various parts.

Be interesting to see the cause of your running issues, mine got a miss fire at the mo which is driving me mad!

Hope it's an easy fix!!

I'll post up pics of the dizzy replacement, it was a full success :)
Next up is replacing the vandalised drivers quarter window frame and grill, we ordered a spare H250 grille, grille and front clip and a whole drivers door complete with glass! At the time there were no H252 grills for sale with the nice VIP badge, which is not great for originality but might deter future theives.
Not exactly cheap but sort of affordable.
I've been studying the parts manual to work out the best approach which is probably to strip the spare door to remove the frame if possible...

Otherwise, the Lib is running great and the Shockworks continue to impress.
I tackled a nice backroad run from Ballarat to Werribee via Anakie, all narrow straights and mini gully runs and the handling and comfort was simply superb. Next up is a dashcam install, install one of the Spec C quick racks in the pile, and that pesky timing belt service :)

What a great car it is now, luxurious, versatile, reasonably economical, sporty yet smooth and refined.
The Shockworks coilovers with digressive 45mm piston dampers made the final difference, allowing all of my other mods to shine :)

Our Baur has received a basic Nakamichi BT head unit install with Focal 5" front and Response 5" rear w/ Kevlar drivers and aim-able tweeters.
I'll follow up with a Fusion 8" powered sub in the boot.

At the same time I replaced all the scratched and cracked dash plastics inc HVAC panel.

In the stockpile are a 3.15 M medium case LSD and parts for a full interior refesh including spare dash, door cards and front and rear seats, the fronts seats are rather rare OMP folding seats with E30 rails which should complete a slightly Italian theme with the wood rim Momo Super Indy and boss I'm restoring. Maybe do the lot in tan macrosuede?

I'm going against the grain installing a slightly taller diff, 3.15 vs the stock 323i 3.23 open diff, but having the ANSA header-back zorst, the tone has a slightly higher pitch meaning it's somewhat more noticeable on the freeway. The taller diff means slightly less revs at cruise and I'd imagine I'll use first more often eg on tight hairpins. The M20b23 is possibly the most revvy of the E30 engines so I hope the ratio works well.

That just leaves an E36/46 powered fast rack, and a short shifter setup to source, and fix the stumbly idle :)
No update on Shockworks for E30 but it's gonna happen eventually :)

In other news, Russel Kap of fire extinguisher brackets etc. fame is the proud new owner of an even rarer JPS E30 323i so I'm looking forward to the forthcoming availability of E30 products from Kap Industries :)

How straight up f%$king awesome is this shot?!

Nice car(s) as always. And love the way you load your posts with photos, particularly the last chain of getting the parts for this beast. :D
I got this plan. It's called 'Save Ass'. And the way it works is this - I slip outta one of these windows and I run like a bastard!

Hey cheers!
I just swapped a whole spare door onto the prez, due to a vandalised front quarter window.
Just need to swap out the locks and twist the loom straight.
Anon also broke the left wing mirror, so that's off and being reinforced or replaced.
The Baur has a decent BT sound system, and I have a complete spare roof so I can replace it bit by bit.

In comparison the Lib seems totally sorted!

Cheers! The thing is to never get disheartened and have the confidence to forge ahead :P

Lib was smelling a bit musty so I'm in the process of (eurgh) cleaning the cabin filter, remove, vacuum each leaf in the filter, rinse in warm water x3, then wrap in a hot dry towel to soak up any remaining moisture.

The MHL to RCA adapter for the galaxy S2 btssm host arrived, it works! :) somewhat intermittently :(
It seems that the MHL function won't re-engage if the connection is interrupted. Maybe rooting the S2 and installing cyanogen is the way forward, or ditch it entirely and use an android stick with an hdmi to RCA converter.

They auto boot on power making things a bit simpler, but I'd need a mouse or some other input device to control it.

In the meantime I'm getting deep into analysing my btssm logs in MegaLogViewer, eg graphing FKC and FLKC versus rpm and load with filters for eg rpm change (transient conditions), open or closed loop. It's nuts!!!

It will be cheapest, fastest, most rootable, but I'll persist with the S2 and see what it's capable of.

Quick update:
Just using the Lib for long distance trips atm, a job for which it's perfect :)
I put my hand up to cover the Gippsland football league matches for RedVision so this last Saturday I was in Maffra...

A member requested a taxi test ride and this included a nice stretch of potholed, muddy dirt...
I was like bring it on!
You can aim the car at everything but the biggest, wheel damaging stuff and the ShockWorks just suck it up.
The member, who has a 230ish atw sedan was not unimpressed with how my (mostly stock) wag handles and drives, as am I.
It's a simple balanced formula: ergonomics, handling, performance and support.

VIP GT-BBB HOUSTON WE HAVE A PROBLEM!

Postby bigBADbenny » Fri Sep 04, 2015 10:54 am

Updated my FS and WTB posts!!!

So the dream run of issue-free motoring is over for the minute.

I'm experiencing what feels like surging in S and S# modes when accelerating with boost in 2nd, 3rd and up.
If I stay on the throttle I get instances of "misfire cylinder 3" and even the related CEL once, IAM pulled to 0.93.

Of course I've used the BtSsm to log the issue and here it is:

Screen shot 2015-09-04 at 10.40.31 AM.jpg
Screen shot 2015-09-04 at 10.40.31 AM.jpg (54.38 KiB) Viewed 7502 times

Link to the full screenshot: https://flic.kr/p/ycrZrx

The log indicates that my stock, original clutch may be the source of the surging sensation, you can see the red rpm trace is sawthoothed, whilst the green speed trace is more even, dipping somewhat as the clutch slips.

Of course I googles up various FAQ's on misfire codes eg: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthr ... ?t=2318069

The misfire may be related to that or is just my sparkplugs needing replacement at 225klm.
So I searched spark plugs in the 2.5T section of this forum:
viewtopic.php?f=18&t=30040&hilit=spark+plugs
Looks like I'll need either:
NGK Iridium IX Spark Plug - LFR6AIX-11- 60K klm @ $23ea
or:
NGK Laser Iridium Spark Plug - ILFR6B - 100K klm @ $27ea

So once I choose sparkplugs (I also have a set of One Step Colder plugs in the pile which my local mechanic advised me to NOT use) I also have a set of used lower klm coilpacks to install at the same time, just in case any of mine are fubar-ed... They're known to corrode and or crack...

Whilst I was at the mechanics doing routine checks and topups, I mentioned my oil use again, saying I was planning to replace the PCV.

The mechanic, Sam, who has years of experience actually fixing cars ;) said: "why don't you test it?"
I was like "how, dont I need to remove it?"...
Sam: "Naaaaah just remove the oil filler cap and put your hand over the hole, you'll feel the PCV manage the crank case pressure on your palm."
Uncovered, the filler vents to atmosphere, mine wasnt particularly smokey, which is good. As you move your hand over the filler its possible to feel the pulsing airwaves venting from the crank case, and as I covered the filler:
"OK, feel the vacuum? Thats working fine"... "Ok" I said: "where my @#$%ing oil going then?"
He went on:
"Well it might be the oil control rings being a little loose, if anything, its a good thing, as it keeps your compression rings lubricated..."
Always look on the bright side eh?

Good to know for sure!

In the meantime I've cleaned my MAF and Cosworth airfilter and reset the ECU.
And of course if I don't thrash the car its fine, if a little sluggish

Any suggestions?

Id suggest do one remedy at a time regarding plugs and coil packs. If you already have the coils whack em on. If it's still no better try plugs. But I'm leaning toward it being plugs as its due for them.

Do you run a boost gauge? It looks like your boost dramatically tapers off independent from your other issues looking at the log. Possible leak somewhere also maybe.

I did spot that tapering of the boost plot so an inlet tract boost check is definitely planned.
I'll start with soapy water spray applied whilst revving the car in neutral with the engine cover removed.
I drove it w/o the cabin filter (it was drying after cleaning it) and noticed quite a lot of hissing on boost from that side of the car...
The culprit is going to be the bov flange seal, the bov itself or the notorious gasket on the stock TB hose.

As for the coil packs, I'll probably only replace any that are obviously cracked or corroded, paying particular attention to cylinder 3.
