I'm running a completely stock/unrooted Nexus 7 2013 with Android 5.0.1 (downloaded update about 6 weeks ago OTA) and it runs USB audio out using my Behinger UCA202.
Also got a package from Japan today containing the AV panel set for installation, and a Kido tune booked in for tonight. Excited! :D

Im planning on buying a UCA222 which appears the same as the UCA202 except its supposed to be newer (2009 compared to 2006 according to some googling)? Anyone using this and had success?

My research suggests the only difference is the colour (silver to red) and software included (which you probably won't be using if it's a permanent car install). I would suggest going with the well-tested and cheaper 202.

So finally I got the AV panel to do the Nexus 7 install purchased from AVOJdm. http://www.avojdm.com/product_info.php?products_id=108
Interestingly, I can no longer find the part on JapanParts.

Total: $216.71USD incl shipping to Melbourne. I think the cost has fallen in the past 12+ months as I remember it being around $300-330?

I note that this is the slightly larger 200mm one and does fit the 2nd gen 2013 version.

However, now my 2.1A cig --> USB plug isn't charging with GPS, BT and wifi activated. It has a very slow discharge whilst "charging" - like 1% every 5 mins or so.
Does anyone know what the minimum amps required to charge are? Specifically, before going to a designated power supply like mini box, I want to try a 2.4A USB plug. Has anyone had success with this?
FYI, I have no plans to run a HDD - just the UCA202 via USB Y-cable. Nexus is wifi only and not rooted and running stock software - no plans to root because I've tried and it's beyond my technical capacity - moreover, Android 5.0 now supports USB audio out. I do not have any software to put it into deep sleep, so open to suggestions - eg. Tasker + ??
I would also like to have Tasker (or other app) activate a wifi hotspot on my phone when in range of the tablet, so if anyone has instructions on how to achieve this it would be most appreciated if you could share.

I've installed a home screen app called Car Dashdroid which is basic but seems to do what I want with a nice clean interface, and costs only $3.

Welcome any suggestions to enhance the in-car Android experience.

is this av panel different to the japanparts one? or will both fit the nexus 7 gen2?
japanparts still sell them -> https://www.japanparts.com/parts/detail/13926

from my reading i think you need a rom with fastcharge capabilities, not sure what current limit is set for the standard OS

yes, you absolutely need fast charge.

I use one of these:

Ah Ok, couldn't find it when I ordered it. And it does say "New!" at the top - could have been recently added?
Looks the same I guess, but dimensions are not listed. There's two versions which differ by a few millimeters in terms of the hole cut out.

This is more expensive than AVOJDM and shipping may be longer (15-42 days). I ordered on 29 Dec and had delivered on 12 Jan, which I thought was pretty good for this time of year and coming from Japan!
Also it doesn't show the brackets and A/C piping, so I'm not sure if that's included. I would recommend going through AVOJDM as my experience was good.

How did you wire it?
It lists the current as 5A (max. 8A), but wouldn't that be divided by 4 USB ports - ie. 1.25 - 2A per port?
Does it get hot?

Hey mate,

So I've been running mine for a few months and have the same power issues.

I'm currently running one of these (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Waterproof-D ... 5af371104c), but am upgrading it to one of these (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/15A-DC-DC-Co ... 3f2569cfa8).

5a (max) is just not enough for, tab + usb3 hub + usb stick.

I have had to disable the fast charge as the tab was powering up/down when I had a USB stick plugged in.
The charge 'just' increase slowly. It's not at max yet, but was completely dead last week, but it 'just' should work.

New power supply should fix this and allow me to run the steering wheel controller with enough current to spare.
I'll post some picks of my setup when it's all upgraded.

Hey Viper, can you download an app to monitor current drain and tell me what it is?
I got a free one called CurrentWidget and I set update intervals to 1 second. I'm seeing up to 1100mA drain with UCA202 connected, BT, wifi and GPS on.
I don't know how useful this information is as, theoretically, a 2.1A charge should be sufficient(?).... but would be interested to know how much additional drain the hub and USB stick has. I'm not planning to connect any additional peripherals at this stage.

5A is plenty. 3A is plenty. You need to revisit your wiring.

would also presumably depend on whether the device has been rooted - eg. Timur's has fast charge enabled, unrooted device like mine can't do this, hence it may be limited to 500mA

I'm thinking of trying to get Timur's on my Nexus again as it now includes support for reverse camera: https://timur.mobi/timurs-kernel-n7-2013/
Is there anyone who could assist with this? I tried following the instructions twice but it was beyond my technical comprehension.

Yep, I'll have a look tonight.

HardwareBoB wrote:5A is plenty. 3A is plenty. You need to revisit your wiring.

Yeah, I don't trust the 5A from that unit.
Everything works fine without the USB stick and wiring is all fine.

USB hub is a 3.0 unit as is the USB stick, which is connected via a 2m USB cable, so that might have something to do with it aswell.
Also, I doubt 3A is plenty when the tab will pull 1.8A on fast charge mode.
Couple in a hot day where the efficiency of the converter is not as high, and you'd be in trouble.

Anyway... I'll do some measuring.
