Killed my EZ30. Amature engine replacement thread

Threw bearing today in my EZ30R after an internal fuel pump leak caused the engine to run lean at wide open throttle.
My options are varied at this point.
-Second hand low km EZ30R
-rebuild my EZ30R
-rebuild my EZ30R with EZ36 internals

Naturally, the lure of a stroker H6 on E85 is very, very tempting.
However, I don't know much more than that the EZ30 heads work with EZ36 internals.
I don't know if this includes the block or just the internals.

Car is a 2004 build 3.0R with a 5EAT, running on E85 with a DW65c pump, 2.5" exhaust and Kido tune.

That sucks, especially considering you had a dw65c which you wouldn't expect issues from since it's used so often in these cars.

I vote for the second hand low km EZ30R + supercharger option.

Trying to keep the costs down at this point, so I'll be doing the work myself. The cost of the blower kit on top of the engine is just unjustifiable, whereas an armful of engine components, most of which I was going to have to replace is much more financially viable.

Damn e85 strikes again (obviously an indirect result of e85 being a necessity to upgrade fuel pump)

Grab an EZ30, and charge it Might mods style. So E85 could kill the engine, yikes, and I was thinking of going for an E85 tune. At least you still have your Golf to runabout in.

How did you confirm the internal fuel pump leak existed and you were running lean on WOT?

What sort of AFR's were you seeing during this event?

How long since your DW65C was installed before this happened?

Were there any symptoms that others could use to help determine if they have the same issue occurring?

All of this info might help others running E85 tunes or considering them.

Its on Facebook and the info is being brought into the E85 H6 thread for future databasing. No point losing the info here ;)

Essentially a recent pump install and at WOT on a H6 fuel pressure rises from low 30's to 45psi (yes a H6 can see mild positive manifold pressure due to high VE) so it pressurises the fuel lines more exposing weaknesses same as high boost on an intercooler finding leaks etc. Symptoms showed up. Advised check fuel pump and symptoms disappear. Damage already done

Basically it felt like I was running out of fuel and surging at 130km/h. Was able to recreate the event a couple of times but was unable to get a hold of Matt to find out what was happening. The next day all seemed well except for a brief stutter at 6000rpm accelerating on to a freeway.
Eventually Matt got hold of me and we discussed what was happening and I inspected the fuel pump. All seemed fine, nothing was evidently out of place, but after re-installation the fuelling issue seemed to have vanished.
However, after a single test run I spotted the oil light flickering on and off at me. I pulled over and heard the engine knocking.

What I'm looking for now is information of building a EZ30/36 stroker, or installing an EZ36.
I'm not interested in building a forced induction car at this point as it's just not in the budget and this is my daily driver so it needs to be on the road quickly.

That would do it.....oil pressure problem....oil starvation....

Especially when taking high g turns or rapid L to R turns or vice versa....engine starves of oil....e.g. crank, rods, bearing(s) in the crank area.

Unless back to the fuel? car was running lean....

Last time you checked oil? was it to the appropriate level?

I checked the oil levels when I pulled over. Levels were good and oil was clean. Was serviced about 2 weeks ago.

Forget your stroker ideas. Dick pulling internet exercise.

The two engines shouldn't be in the same family, they're as common to eachother as a commodore to a falcon. I reckon they have between 0 and 5 interchangeable parts.

That said, don't jump ahead of yourself. What's wrong with a stock rebuild ez30? Set of bearings, seal kit, new tensioner and chain guides, slap together. Assuming crank isn't munted.

If you can find suitable pistons and rods, have you investigated offset grinding the crank?

Dont offset grind the crank, they're weak enough. Much less strength than an ej20 per journal. All sorts of weird bending moments from the 19ish mm journal width compared to 23 in a EJ. Whole shebang is barely longer than an EJ crank yet holds an extra cyl.

Stock rebuild, flog the tits off it.

36 is not compatible. at all while not going dry sump.

Ok, so after reading some stuff and deciding it's all to hard, the car will just receive another 3.0L engine.
Before it goes in though, I'll throw some new seals and things at it, maybe paint the rocker covers and manifold something pretty. I'm going to look in to how much of the wiring and hoses can be tucked away while it's all apart and also clean the hell out of the engine bay. If I can get some extra money together it'll cop some Raptor headers and a decat.
If I can be bothered, I'll document everything and write up a build thread.
