Why would you have any problems?

Shouldnt be a problem.

Only 3.2% difference from the oem 215/45/17. Within roadworthy limits.

Further investigation makes me change my previous statement. I dont like to give incorrect information.

From SA Transport rules.....

"for passenger
cars manufactured on or after
1 January 1973, the tyres
fitted must be within 15mm
of the overall diameters) and
the wheel rims must be within
50mm of the diameter listed on
the tyre placard"

235/50/18 will be 19.9mm larger in overall diameter so will indeed be deemed defective. :(

You just need to make sure you have the correct load rating.

Bugger about the mirror Hamish.

Any reason why you want to go to that size tyre?

Another option is Yokohama Advan AD08's. Spoke to a few guys who run it on BNR34s. Exceptional wet and dry performance and is really hard to lose control with. Bit on the pricey side though but just tossing it out there as an alternative to the pilotsports

235/50/18 is huge. Forrester type profile.

You would go 235/35 or more commonly 235/40.

A 235/40 gave me near identical rolling diameter to a 225/45.

Sorry 50 was a typo. Meant to be 40.

But we're talking about tyre legalities here which is Hamish's concern and in his state are indeed defectable at that size.

Thank Mark, yeh that was the concern. I don't really want to get a defect for running the tyres as that would be a huge pain in the ass because I don't have stock wheels anymore.

Although 235/40 are much much cheaper so it's a bit of a gamble

Theyre cheaper as theyre Commodore/Falcon spec so they sell more.

Well, we do take a gamble with a lot of our car mods.

To be honest, 99% of police would only be checking for possible rubbing, worn and some, the correct load rating when it comes to tyres if you ever had the misfortune to be checked.

There's only one cop i know who would even think of checking tyre size. If for some reason you need to get a roadworthy, borrow some wheels.
I've had a little experiance with said issues

I was pulled over by a cop down near noarlunga in my legnum and he asked to see the tyre plaquard.. Plaquard states 215/45/17, I had 225/45/17s. He didnt seem to mind that they were stretched on a 9" rim and the rim was protruding from guard by about 3mm

So given that, if you had 235/40/18 i'd say its a fair chance if they have legal tread, are within the guards then 99.5% of police wouldnt care. They would be more likely to defect you for tint, height or any other item they think they may find.

Probably something I should ask my insurance company but how do they go about covering the car if defectable items are on it? Can they void the claim.

Ie coilovers, too dark tint or tyre issues above?
