Oil analysis on GT

Postby Q » Fri Aug 22, 2008 1:40 pm

Stared a fair bit of research into which oil best suits my bike and riding and thought I may as well do the same for the car too.

All wear levels appear within acceptable limits for first sample. Silicon level is most likely due to seal and gasket material reaction
with the lubricant. Water content acceptable. Fuel dilution satisfactory. Viscosity within specified operating range.

Action: Resample at next recommended interval to monitor and establish wear trend.

This is a copy of the results to my second analysis using the same oil, the only difference being the addition of a HKS air filter. I can't track down the first analysis but the only difference is the Silicon level which suggests that the HKS filter is not exactly great, letting thru too many contaminants (Filter has been checked for correct installation and has a good seal). Needless to say I will be probably be going back to the standard filter again because the only thing the HKS does is produce a bit more noise :(

I've just had the 100K service done and I have put Amsoil fully synthetic in to try (got it at a good price). Have read many good reports about this oil but am reserving judgement until I get the analysis done but after dropping the Amsoil (M/C specific) out of my bike last night I'm not that confident (came out like water after only 1100klms and it was a 20W50  ).

What do you use? What weight? Why that one?
Incidentally I have Amsoil Heavy Duty in the diffs and the gearbox (5sp man) so will see how that goes too.

You forgot Repsol... It's one Subaru actually carries & is what I'm currently using.

Will be switching to Royal Purple very soon though.

As far as I know, most Subaru dealers in Melbourne still use Castrol Magnatec.

:? :? :? Excuse my ignorance, I'm neither a mechanic or a chemical analyst :? :? :?

But how does the air filter affect the silicon levels in your oil? to me the air filter will only affect the combustion chamber & its outputs :?

But any way if your not going to use the HKS filter ill gladly take it off your hands & take the risk

Should explain the issue with filters and silicon...

Thanks for the kind offer of taking my HKS filter...............that would be a no.

Hey Q, digging up an old thread but I'm interested in whether you ended up getting the UOA after using the Amsoil?

Also under what driving conditions were you using the Castrol Edge?

The results look good, I have been on that same oil for almost 6 months now. Engine runs great, hardly uses any oil at all even after track events, I'm deciding now whether I go for another lot of same oil or upgrade to Amsoil 10W/40 Group IV.

Tek, I didn't end up getting an analysis done with the Amsoil. For me the engine sounded alot noisier especially on start up and that really put me off so have never bought it again.

I did change the weight of I oil am using to 5w-40 (from 5w-30) for that little better bit of protection when the engine is warm (alot of people reckon that the 30 is too light for the Boxer engine especially if it's being enjoyed like it should and I tend to agree) but I reckon as long as it's a decent quality oil at the right weight it shouldn't matter what brand you are using.

How often are you changing oil?

Interesting re the noise, I was about to click the order button yesterday on the Amsoil... lucky I held out!

What viscosity did you use with Amsoil?

I'm leaving the oil in no longer than 6 months, after which I've done about 7,000Kms.

Not sure if you've read that very very long oil article written by a Doctor Haas, but he is one of the few people who advocates running a thinner oil, rather than thicker oil in high temperature/load conditions:

http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showth ... p?t=136052

I decided to test his theory. In my case at an event last summer I ran 5W-30. It was 40degC ambient, and oil was around 105-110degC. I was still holding over 4.5bar pressure at anything over 4000rpm. The factory spec is 3 bar @ 5000rpm. If that is not enough oil pressure then I don't know what is. There was also next to no oil consumption after that session.

Besides I definitely feel the engine is more responsive than running an xx-40 oil. With my 2.5i I need all the help I can get ;)

I just picked up another bottle of the 5W-30 today.

Jim is that Castrol Edge 5W-30? I have no idea what oil to buy so may as well try out that for my first oil change. Does Subaru stock that or will I have to provide it....probably going to save $50 if I provide it myself anyway, how many L does it take from empty?

Yeah that's the one Kieran. You can buy it from most auto shops, Autobarn, Repco, Supercheap etc. $45-$50 for 5L. Not sure about your 2.5T but it would be anywhere around 4-4.5L to fill it from dry.

If you want to use your own oil you just give it to them when you book your car in.

The standard oil is likely cheaper than the Edge, even when being charged by the dealership.

He makes a lot of sense. The only reason I haven't gone a 0W was the extra cost and the reason I went up to the 40 was that the engine has close to 150000klms on it now so it's well worn in and I figured it would shear down to a true 30 pretty quickly anyway. Any reason you didn't go with a 0W??
