A/F Sensor question

Hey guys,

As far as I know a MAF(mass air flow) and AFM (Air flow meter) are the same things which is the small black box on your intake system.

however an A/F sensor is a air/fuel ratio sensor which you will find in your exhaust system and these seem to be a common problem on the 2.0l GT's... I have had mine replaced twice in a year!
If it was bank 1, sensor 1 then that is your Air/Fuel ratio sensor and that is what you will need to replace not the MAF OR AFM.

And as far as I know there is only two options for this 1: you buy a sensor from the company who makes them for Subaru or 2: you buy the exact same sensor no difference at all apart from the Subaru box it comes in and pay the mark up for it too!

Actually u got me thinking there.. i was under the impression that the A/F sensor was the MAF :S

EDIT: Did some googling and it appears ur right VIC GT.. BANK 1 Sensor 1 is the O2 sensor

Finally got it fixed guys. Got the Genuine part from Subaru via a mate for around $400, we replaced it ourselves.. took about 10 mins. Looks like the engine light is now off

Now you can use your cruise control again! Keep any proof of purchase, I would not be surprised if it went again within the next 12 months

definitely. I'm on my sixth one in the two and a half years ice owned the car, this latest one isn't even a month old andim getting fluctuating idle with the aircon on already...

Just a quick question tangcla, I'm wondering what fuel you use? I'm asking because I have had my sensor replaced twice in the last year and the b1 s1 code has just come up again for the 3rd time! I have been told that it my be fuel contamination that could be causing the sensor to fail so frequently I have always used BP ultimate...

Has anyone else been told a reason for their sensor to fail?

And what fuel does everyone use?

Maybe I should use different fuel?

I've put on about 5000 KMs and she's still going strong guys.. Vortex 98

I'm getting my third one put in on Monday. I use Vortex 98 as well. I'm sick of mine going. At least my Ecudatascan now shows me the code straight away so i know what it is.
Error Code: P0031 ho2s - Heater Control Circuit Low Bank 1 Sensor.
That = O2 Sensor = A/F Sensor.

BL dude, i feel your pain.

I remember that my sensor died straight after i washed my car.. maybe somehow i sprayed a little bit too much water through the bonnet scoop (could be a co-incidence or not..) ? Mine's still good atm, i'm a little bit more careful when washing the car now....

Ok got mine sorted again. $325 all up. Used a aftermarket sensor for a change, as the last three were from Subaru.
And not wanting to enter the whole "which fuel is better" debate, but Paul from Pulse said that Caltex was his LEAST prefered fuel.
So i'm now going to try this aftermarket piece with different fuel and see how long it lasts.

What aftermarket sensor did you use? And are you referring to AF (intake) or O2 (exhaust) sensor? I think we have wires crossed along the way

AF = O2
MAF/AFM = Intake
AF/O2 = Exhaust


I believe it was a Bosch sensor but i'm not 100% sure as Paul sourced it for me after giving Subaru a ring to see if they would replace it under warrenty. They said NO, so he went out and got an aftermarket one.
