The 5 speed auto is gay nothing can be done as far as I know without the ecu shitting itself have rung several people about this. :angry2: Maybe the high stall converter.

Same trap here mate; my last car I bought an Auto because Dad was insistent that I get one so he could drive it "should the need arise". Well guess what in the 10 years I had the car he did not drive it once! I think it made me drive that slushbox just that much harder. It still lasted 220KKms of my punishment though :P.

I contemplated changeover to manual too, but it was just too labour and time intensive that I never followed through with it.

Hi There,
You will need to source ecu, tcu, biu, new keys, combo meter and bulkhead harness,it will be very expensive.

Cheers

I've done the conversion as have many other on RSLC for Gen2s and 3s.

You'll just need the following hardware:
Clutch (master, slave, pedal, plate)
Manual flywheel
Manual gear surround
Manual dead pedal
Manual tail shaft (5MT tailshaft is longer than the 5AT. That said length of 6MT = length 5AT)
Manual brake pedal and accelerator pedal (spacing is slightly different)
Manual gearbox and transmission cross member
Matching rear diff for gearbox

Once you've fitted that stuff, you just need to pull teh TCU and ground a wire on the ECU and you're done.

It's a weekend job, once you've got a good set of ramps or axle stands and mates and beer and trolley jacks.

I've done a complete coversion myself (Heritage to GTB) and would do it again if needed.

Cheers

New torque converter with a higher stall helps :D

& there are places that can retune the gear box ECU... They are just few & far between & realistically they aren't cheap... If you wanted a strong auto box for drags etc, you'd do a 4sp auto conversion as they have been worked on a fair bit, in fact I know people who are going from manual WRX's to the 4sp auto just for drags :D

Daresay significantly easier on the gen2/3 than gen4.

Where? And do they do the Liberty gearbox?

I know there are places that do it in Australia, but sadly I am yet to find one :( Since the 5sp auto isn't that old - Therefore not many of them have gone bad - not many tranny places have touched one before.

There is a place around the corner from my work which is confident, but their limited experience with the 5sp auto turns me off somewhat.

I think you'll find there's next to no-one who has tuned the 5spd auto in Australia.
I know Singapore have done rebuilding of the auto box, but not anything electronically.

There are people around... It's just like finding a needle in a hay stack :P

Realistically, a good torque converter with a good tune will get you 90% of what you need... You can strengthen the box, but unless you planning on running 400kw ATW's it's not really required.

There are plenty of people running good power out of the auto box with no dramas :D

Why would you bother changing the stock torque converter though? With 3,100 stall RPM factory (and some have proven you can lanch at 3800 with a heavy enough foot on the brake) why bother going for higher? That would be just silly in my opinion - you would lose all driveability on the street.

I'm not after a TCU retune for more power, I want more responsiveness and F/R bias adjustments.
