HELP: smoke...?

Hey mate,

Usually this happens if you've been giving the car a good work out the night/day before....

Get yourself an oil catch can, its usually the cause of the crank case venting back into your induction...

The oil settles overnight/during a long stay at the bottom of the manifold parts, which then gets sucked through on initial start up...

Again, an oil catch can will remove this problem.

thanks for all your replies guys... update is that the amount of smoke is getting smaller. This morning there was a bit again (a puff) but less than yesterday. Hopefully it will continue to slow

Just a quick update... smoke has gone completely, stopped a few days after the initial incident - must have been the cleaner. Scared the sh@t out of me though (that and the wife giving me that look of 'what have you done this time....' )

Sorry for jumping in late on the threat, but the other thing to consider is the amount of oil in the sump - particularly post a service.

My SpecB had been serviced by the Holden/Nissan dealer I bought it from prior to it going on the lot so imagine my reaction when I started it the day after I brought it home and got a really good cloud of oil smoke out the tailpipes. I took it to a real mechanic who knows Subarus and got him to drop the oil and he thinks there was at least 25% too much oil in the sump, some of which was then settling in the cylinders when parked and blowing out the back on startup.

Haven't had a problem since a real Subaru mechanic took over.

hmmm.. thanks Nigel, I did actualy get it serviced at Subaru (not sure if that means much anymore though...) - but I have also heard about overfulling problems before...

Another late one to the thread - just wanted to share an experience for anyone worried about this in the future.

A while back I took my previous ride in for a service and a couple of days later noticed the smoke you describe. It was white / blue in colour which had me rather worried. Oil for sure! Turns out that the mechanic put too much oil in and the result was as NigelT describes above.

If you experience this after a service, have a lookzies as your oil level.
