Are Coilover springs universal?

Postby adhar » Sat Oct 10, 2009 4:36 pm

Hi guys,

This might sound like a silly question, but are coilover springs a univeral fit?

i.e. can you fit different brand springs into your coilovers? Or do you havt to stick to the same brand.

Cheers

As far as I'm aware - pretty much universal. You just need to know the ID (Internal Diameter) and the spring rate you want to go for. King Springs (amongst many others) for example will sell 65mm ID springs in a range of lengths (get the length closest to whats on there) in a range of spring rates.

So technically, I can't see why you can't get a spring the right size from any manufacturer, as long as the ID is the same ;)

And OD. Depending on the width and offset of your wheels you may have clearance issues between the tyre and spring. (Sentinel did with his Teins and Tenrat did with his STI Enkei's and a set of Racing Logic (?) coil overs)

Yeah i ended up buying Tenrat's racing logics. I have standard spec B 18 inch wheels so they fit no probs. There is only about 5mm clearance though so i can see what Tenrat had trouble with as he has wider wheels.

The springs rates (8kg/7kg) that came on the racing logics were so rough on the roads i drive, so i bought some lighter springs from racing logic, so i now have 6kg/6kg (much like the Tein setup i think).
It's still bumpy but is now bearable.

The reason i ask is that i thought if the 8kg and 7kg springs would fit other peoples coilovers maybe someone else could get some use out of them, they are only sitting in my shed.
