WTT: 3inch center section for stock center section

Postby pips06 » Thu Oct 08, 2009 8:18 am

Im looking at returning my exhaust to stock.

I'd like to trade my 3inch stainless steel mid section (section between the dump and y pipe) for the stock standard mid section. I have an 07 model but as far as i know this part should be the same for all gen 4 liberty's (happy to be corrected).

The 3inch midsection comes with resonator and flexjoint.

The mid-section has been on the car for no longer than a month.

Looking for $300 my way plus stock mid section.

Sydney buyers prefered as i'd rather meet at an exhaust shop and do a straight swap.

Ben.

How loud is it compared to a stock Y-pipe?

Does not at add any additional noise. In saying that, i was running it with stock mufflers.

If you're running aftermarket mufflers, a 3" centre pipe will add a great deal of noise. It did for me anyway, but others may find it tolerable.

If you're running aftermarket mufflers you're already going to have additional noise. I wouldn't think the mid-section would add much on top of the mufflers?

I beg to differ. The stock mid pipe has a significant resonator and much smaller diameter pipe. You will certainly get a bit more noise running with the 3" pipe and an aftermarket resonator (hotdog) imo. I started with just the phat dump pipe and the rest stock. Then I did a 3" s/s mid pipe with hotdog. More dak dak for sure.

Even with a mini-muffler AND a hot dog, the 3" setup I had (including a Phat dump and Phat mufflers) generated way too much noise for my kids and any passengers. 3" setup is great for the track but a bit too impratical for street use on a daily driver IMO (got a few others who share this view as well).

I tried replacing the centre with a stock one, and that reduced the noise greatly, but performance and response was terrible. :( So I went the middle ground, and put the K2 Gear centres back in (dual 2" pipes). Performance and reponse was not as good as the 3" setup, but it beat out the stock setup. So it took me a few tries but I finally found a good compromise between noise and performance, albeit it was the original setup I started with. :?

I cant confirm that it would be a straight bolt-on but im sure it could be adapted to fit.

I think so. But even if it was, I would not recommend a 3" setup for a 2.5 NA. You would lose a lot of low end power and it would be a terrible driving street car.

I ran a phat dump and mufflers for a while, in all honesty the noise was very minimal, then the centre pipe was fitted, that's when the true noise come and extra throttle response.

IMO this centre pipe will provide a few extra db's if used on a ej25t.

Btw does your piping reduce in size at the y section? If so what size?

Yes, it's currently mated to the stock y pipe.

For what it's worth my g/f didn't notice any noise increase going from just a phat dump pipe to a phat dump pipe +
3" mid section.
