Fitment of my Carbon front Lip

Postby F1Pilot » Tue Sep 29, 2009 6:55 pm

Here is a short description with some pics of how I fitted my Carbon front lip.

1. The first step is to remove the small plastic deflectors from under the front bar.

2.Then I removed all the screws/clips that hold that hold the bar on the bottom.

3. Considering the front bar has multiple mounting holes on the underside already, I decided to use these to mount the lip.

4. Doing a quick dummy fit of the bar, I worked out which holes are useable, as some of them do not cover the area of the lip. I then inserted 6mm rivnuts/nutserts. If you are wondering what these are, they are a great tool which works just like a rivet gun, but inserts threads into the holes. The only problem is the purchase cost of one of these guns/kits as they are around $150 for the cheapest but are just so handy that I bought one.
*****One point to notice with this part is that the steel frame inside the front bar is connected to one of the screws which you have taken out, so when you insert the rivnut into that particular hole, make sure you pick the metal frame with it as your crimping the rivnut down. ( If you miss, no biggy, you can drill them out)*********

5. Then to make sure that the holes I was going to drill in the top of the lip for the bolts where in the correct postion, I used 'corn relief' pads from the chemist. (Sounds wierd I know). They are a small foam pad with a 6mm hole in the middle and sticky on one side. I put these around all the holes I wanted to mount with, using a bit of blu tac on the car side, and the very sticky side facing down.

6. Then using two jacks, I slowly raised the lip into place letting it push up against all the sticky pads. Because the sticky side is soo much stickier than the blutac, they all came off with the lip, giving me the perfect place to drill the holes. So i just drilled through the centre of the pads, then took them off.

7. Finally I then bolted the lip on, using suitable washers and loctite.

The first pics arent working properly yet, I will fix them soon. It shows what the rivnuts look like when crimped into the bar.

Nice writeup, but I don't understand why you had to drill your own holes. Is it a generic lip?

Also got pics of the finished results?

The lip is made by myself. Check my other topic in the cosmetic section.

Does look great BUT isn't extending wider than the guards a "canary" possibility?

Im not sure on that one, if by guards you mean the outer most lip (as in on top of tyre) then they are ok cause the lip isnt that wide. But if you mean just wider than the front original bar, well doesn't they original Sti lip do that too?
