Oil leak?!

Postby matt » Sun Sep 27, 2009 2:02 am

Well, i was just out in the shed and thought i might take my engine cover off to have a look as i haven't taken it off before, and this is what i found;

Now i have no idea when it comes to these engines, all i know is its near the inter-cooler, i was wondering if anybody might know where this is comin from, why it is comin from there, and is it potentially goin to lead to some sort of problem?

Cheers in advance, Matt.

Pull the pipe going to the intercooler and see if there's any oil in the intake track

I took it off and couldn't see any oil, there was like an oily film inside but was not black, just a bit oily feeling.
I cleaned up the oil and went for a quick drive and checked it again and its still clean, ill check it again later in the week.

It's not uncommon to get some oil in the intercooler - Thus why I have a catch can :D But I've never seen oil where you've got it.

I know some members have had some oil leaking issues, but that was because of their boost controller (Don't ask me to explain, I've got no idea :P ).

Hopefully one of the more experienced & mechanically minded members can help you out... But I don't think it's anything to panic about. Just keep & eye on it & maybe get it checked out at the next service.

I had the same leak a while back. Did the same as you, cleaned it up and put it back together. Hasn't been a problem since :)

Hi, im looking at upgrading to a gt, one i have been looking at has oil in the same spot. It has 180k km on it. The car seams to run fine however there was smoke coming from under the bonnet also when we pulled up. Did anyone find a cause for that oil leak?

Mine has the same stain marks as in those pictures when I bought it.

I pulled the pipe off just after buying the car, cleaned the pipes and the intercooler out and refitted. No oil leak there since after 2 years. Maybe an issue with not being tight enough from the factory? Or loosening over time?

That would be the oil leaking and then burning causing the smoke...

I had my seals done on both sides of the rocker cover, the intake and cooler pipes checked and cleaned..

It looks like your intercooler piping is a bit damaged/melted, if it has a hole in it under boost it will spray oil out, or as mentioned maybe the clamp wasn't tight enough and this was the case. If people have removed it, cleaned it and not had an issue since I would suspect the pipe just being loose and needing to be tighter.
Built not bought, it's a way of life.
