A Couple Q's...

Hi all, I'm new to this board. I have a reasonable general mechanical knowledge, but not much when it comes to Subarus; especially turbo Subarus..! I've just a couple questions about me beast, an MY08 Libz GT-B:

1. Is that an electronic turbo on the front left side of the engine (from drivers pov)? If so, what's it for or if not then what is it??

2. Is that a kickdown button under the accelerator pedal? Or is it a plug/button/random thing. I'm referring to the black rubber dot that is immediately behind the pedal.

I've had a catback exhaust system put on too, it now sounds like a Subaru should. I was amazed by the miniscule size of the pipes that split and go to each rear muffler..! The problem I have now is that it seems to have made it really jerky and surgey under full power at lower rpm and I was told this is because of a system of boost sensors and oxygen sensors. Apparently the standard computer doesn't know how to use all this extra boost the turbo is producing now with the restrictive exhaust removed, and just opens the wastegate and lets the power blow out the exhaust. I've been told (by an EcuTek salesman) that the said brand of Flash Tune will stop this, as the computer will be remapped and told how to handle the power. I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem, had a flash tune and how are the results!

Electronic turbo? I'm not sure what you're talking about there. Can you provide a pic of what you're referring to? The turbocharger is on the driver's side of the car, just under the clutch master cylinder.

No kickdown button. That'd be the pedal stop. It's probably there to protect the carpet from overuse of WOT.

Yes, guys have had their cars custom tuned. A lot of them. Just about anyone would recommend that a tune be done. As for ECUTEK, well there is a difference of opinion on that system. Their case isn't helped by the fact that there are a number of very good tuners out there who can "open source" tune the car (no need for software licenses such as ECUTEK) and produce the same or better results. As for which you go, for us to provide a recommendation, you'll need to let us know where you are. If you're in Adelaide, ECUTEK is a very viable option as S&J down there has a fantastic reputation. Most of the ECUTEK tuners in Sydney however have a questionable to bad reputation amongst many in this forum.

The electric turbo your referring too is an air pump which is activated on start up when the engine is cold. Its used to help control emissions.

The button under the pedal……. Not sure, I thought it might there to hold down the carpet, its appears to be plug.

Btw my advice, don't waste your money or time with Ecutek…….. Heard many stories of people still having boost issues even after getting a tune and it can't be reserved either!!!!!

I don't need to answer your q's - Senator and Tony have answered them, other than get your rocket tuned!! Best mod value for money wise and by far the best results! Especially after the zorst you have put on. Be sure to tune after you have completed all of your intended drive line mods though.

I guess you could call it an electric fan turbo.


Its an air pump that is used to pass EPA laws just for cold starting...
It gets the cats fired up and running quicker as it pumps oxygenated air into the exhaust stream.

Thanks for your replies everyone, it seems I'll have to get this tune done. I aint gonna play with it too much tho, I like being able to throw it sideways under control yet still be able to take my grands for a cruise without shaking them to pieces. I live in Southside Brisbane if anyone has some good ideas but I can easily take a run down to Sydney if I have to.

Thanks Lolzer, that's what I was looking for! And I dunno about that button; I was down under the dash one day and noticed it, pushed it and it felt like it 'clicked' in and out. I guess I'm dreaming.
