DD Split Install with thanks to FHRX

Postby garbo41610 » Sat Sep 05, 2009 9:09 am

Hey all,

Posted a little while ago about cheap DD gear from MEA through the new DD distributor. Well got them installed by Marty and the guys down at FHRX, and they did a superb job. Can't wait to go back to them when I finally decide between replacing the OEM sub in the parcel tray or go with my 12'' JL Audio 12w3's...

The mid-bass is great, the tweeter are a little bit bright being metal dome, but they are a great upgrade from stock. Will upgrade them again to a better set of two ways or three ways when funds allow. Also need to upgrade amp when funds allow as well, but one thing at a time.

Anyways, thought I would post up a couple of pics of the install. Like I said, FHRX did great work.

Sorry if the pics are a bit large.

Neat install! Typical of Marty's work as always.

The outer door skins look deadened with Dynamat Extreme, but what is used on the inner skins? (That thin black sheet). It looks nice and easy to work with....

Yeah pretty much need dextrous hands, you reach up through the holes and press everything down against the outer skin. Bear in mind that the window mechanism and regulator is kind of like suspended halfway in the thickness of the door cavity, so you just work around it the best u can.

When sound deadening you don't need to cover every square inch, you just need to cover as much as practical (and within budget). It gets to a point where if you cover >50% of the surface area the extra benefit becomes less and less.

Did he use the O.E spacer, cut out the crapper stock speaker and mounted the DD into it?

No, they made a new MDF spacer, painted and sealed it.

Actually, they made about 4 or 5 sets to get the imaging right.

Took them all about about 15 hours and the results are amazing.

Will post some pics of the spacers when I get a chance (read, after Top Gear).

Bit later than I thought, there was a bit on Foxtel last night after Top Gear...

Here are a couple of trial spacers.
