Scraping help?

ok my 07 sti enkies arrived today, i installed them, the rears clear fine but the fronts are rubbing on my coiloversprings. i thought of like a 5mm spacer has anyone else got any better ideas, i think the main reason is that the sti wheel is 7 1/2 inch wide conpared to stock 7 inch, but however the tyre sizes on the enkies are 215/45 compared to stock 225/40, so im stumped all i cal think of is spacer...

Pic attached. Not the best but you sort of see what I'm talking about. And ignore how dirty they are!! (I drive a major freeway that is being totally rebuilt!!)

Look at the position of the lowest part of the spring i.e. as it ends - it is clearly further our than the spring coil above it. Well, as you turn the spring, that part of the spring rotates away from the wheel rim. The coil above it for some reason seems to curve in with it pulling it further away from the rim.

The pic below is with an approx 45-60deg turn and you can already see it's pulled away from the rim. The other front wheel was the same. I ended up turning it approx 90-100deg

Just a thought, maybe play with the height a bit too and see if that makes a difference.

I wouldn't be selling your wheels just yet mate.

only difference is steve that its not my wheels that are scraping on the coils its the actual tyre... but will have to talk to my mechanic aswell to see what he may reccomend. thanks for the photo!

215/45 was also stock on the 12 spokers at one stage by the way.

yer the enkies are 215/45 but there still just hitting the coils compared to the stock 225/40 which just missed, must only be hitting my 2.5mm?

maybe a different tyre? Not all tyres of the same branded size are actually the same size. Some /45's will have a straight sidewall while some will bulge a litte. Also, some 215's are wider than other 215's

Try rotating the springs on the coilovers first and foremost. You might surprise yourself with how much the spring can move off centre around the shock tube. Jack the car up and put on stands if you have them and have a bit of a play. If you aren't willing to yourself and don't want to drive it, change the wheels back and drive the car (with the 12 spokers in the boot) to a shop for them to do it.

Tyre wise, have a look around at what other guys have on their wheels - that'd be the cheapest option for you. FWIW, I have Michelin Pilot Preceeda 2's on mine now (still the same 7 spoke 7"er you had) and the sidewall is pretty flat on the outside. I haven't had a look at the inside face of the wheel though

It shouldn't be major. This is the first time I've heard of the tyre rubbing on the spring in the year I've been whoring in here

As Smythie has mentioned, some tyres bulge, and some are flat, but recently there has been a fair few tyres released that 'peel' back from the rim (from what I've been told, required by drifters). Check my pic and you'll see my tyre slopes away from the rim. I bought these tyres for a number of reasons; one of the main is that the side wall pulls away effectively giving me a bit of space to fit under the guards when running a 8.5" wide tyre and to miss internals / suspension components.

Might be worth looking at some alternate tyres that offer this. But, as I said at the start, spin the coils mate!

a fair few tyres released that 'peel' back from the rim (from what I've been told, required by drifters).

They aren't made like that, they stretch the tyres over the rims, i.e put a 225 on an 10" rim etc.

I'd go with a 5mm spacer, you won't have any problems with bearings, too short studs etc.
