Re: Project Sentinel - 20 August - HP-F Tune

Postby Sentinel » Thu Aug 20, 2009 10:35 pm

So, as Al has mentioned in his thread, we got both our cars tuned at HP-F yesterday.

Al's is an auto, mine a manual.

Thoughts:
Approx 20kw gain across the board.
Gone is the surge around 2.5 to 3.5k rpm.
Much more refined delivery.
Less breathless at the top.
Bloody hammers from 3k onward - massive difference in feel here (bum-o-meter of course)
More go down low.
Note the relatively safe boost changes.
Very happy.
Thanks to the Marty and Matt at HP-F.

Charts below. Sorry about the orientation of them!

Interesting. Looks like boost is limited to 14psi in your setup, up to 3 psi less than Sydney-siders are tuning to! But then again, that's pretty safe. Boost is pretty flat though, which is good to see from the stock system. Mind you, the sag of boost from ~3100-4650rpm is a bit odd.

For the range of mds you've got on the car (dump and mufflers, etc) I'm surprised it's not a bit more than that.

Looks like the car will kick in nice and solid early on but feel like it's petering off the higher you go in the rev range (ie: torque curve drops off pretty hard as it moves up the rev range). Certainly would appear to be a smoother drive now.

Power results seem typically low for a DD Dyno, so the peak of ~150kW is not unsurprising. What other 6MT GTB's have they done there that they can provide a graph of for comparison???

What's your take on the results?

Not overly fussed about having massive gains. Al and I were not looking to reach 200kw or anything. We wanted to improve driveability, fix the surge / surging down low, give it a bit more bottom end, and make it smoother. We got all that and some! The tune is safe which were happy about but still managed to get healthy gains in KW across the range and some decent Nm. Yes, the Nm drop off, but the power takes over as it does. Yes, the boost is flat at 14ish. Yes, it's conservative.

The bum-o-meter is the best measure in my opinion. The numbers are only half the story. Bit surprised at how many GT-B's base run's can produce some many varied results. Just goes to show that the figures dyno's produce are all relative only. No debate on that one!

Sure we could have gone harder, pushed the PSI up, been more aggressive, but in the end Al and I got what exactly what we wanted and that folks is why we are happy chaps. Love it. Feels like a new car. Can't wait to through it through the hills. :yahoo:

Now that set of curves is more like what I would expect going by the paper specs from Subaru -original torque peak mid 3k rpm and power near 6k .rpm

Important thing though is that you're happy with it.

Hey, no arguments there Steve! The results you boys got today are 100% indicative of the DDDyno and how it works. To get 200kW on that dyno you'd need a significant setup with lots of mods.

So to clarify, the mods you had were:
- Mufflers
- Filter of some kind
and thats about it?

Will be good to see if the surging returns as the ECU would have been reset today and the surging normally disappears on reset and then returns later. If it's flat and smooth to drive, that's all you really want on a daily basis. Superb. :good:

First I heard of it Craig. The car had it from the day I picked it up brand new. Never disappeared when Subaru reset ECU... I'll be pissed if it returns!

Anyone else heard of this returning??

Yeah, me.
When I did my stereo install and re-earthing of the battery and various engine components. Battery was off enough that the ECU must have reset itself. I had no surging for a week or 2 . . . . . . then it returned. :x

EDIT: Also good to see such positive results from such minor mods too. Did you get AFR graphs and ask about how your injector duty was looking at these power levels?
EDIT: Tuned for 95 or 98 RON juice?
Tuned in S or S# ?

Matt at HP-F mentioned the torque converter in the Auto was the cause of the massive difference
in curves between Steve's torque graph and mine. Does that make any sense to you Smythie? I'm
curious to know a bit more as to why my torque graph is being seen as a bit weird. . . .
Cheers
Al

It could well be. I might look around for some other auto charts if I get the time. But yeah, the torque converter can have the effect of multiplying transferred torque when it is slipping so could be the reason why the tractive effort is so high (comparatively) down low.
