RAN94A's first mods!!

Postby RAN94A » Thu Jun 25, 2009 1:37 am

Hi guys,

Had the car for about 6 months now so decided enough was enough and started a slight modification process :) going for mostly cosmetics as you cant get huge gains without spending buckets on an N/A (but a Vin Tune is definitely on the books)

So far:
Modified stock mufflers to quad tips (thanks gtspec)
Led parkers, number plate and HID Headlights and fog lights (thanks to tangcla and Leo)
Painted brake calipers
Resonatorectomy (Leo)
LED boot light strip (thanks arith)
Personalised Number Plate - Ranga :P

Coming:
HKS air filter
Vin Tune
Subaru Towbar
Black Window Tints

Maybe:
Lower springs
New Rims

(pics arent great, but they were either taken with a pocket camera or the weather was terrible so dirty car)

Which reminds me, I should re-paint my front calipers... or at least give em a clean :P

Hi mate,

Whats the story with painting your brake calipers?

What type of paint did you use. Was it a DIY job or did you you get someone to do it for you?

If DIY what was the process?

What was the cost? Materials and labour (if there was any).

Thoughts on painting vs new calipers already painted?

Cheers

Brakes was a DIY job just over an afternoon.

We got our paint from Repco, it's actually engine enamel as the specific brake caliper paint only came in a matt gold not a metalic colour. (Only difference was the temperature rating, but unless your tracking the car i dont see it being a problem)
Cost about $15-$20 One can will do all four.

First step once you've taken all the wheels off (if anyone knows of a safe jacking point to get both front wheels up at once PLEASE TELL ME lol)

+Remove the brake pads from the calipers
+Just using a degreaser/lubricant/cleaner make sure you give the calipers a thorough clean and get as much of the brake dust/gunk off them as possible to give a clean sticking surface.
+ leave for about 10 minutes to allow the cleaning product you used to dry
+ mask/protect the disc completely as well as the inner wheel arch (just using newspaper or a rag)
+ Spray the caliper carefully to avoid the paint pooling in one area. and allow to dry (to be safe i used a hairdryer to make sure it was definitely dry and bonded to the caliper)
+ Apply a second coat
+ if possible avoid driving the car over night to allow the paint to cure completely

Mines been on about a week and a half with no problems or peeling at all. :)
