(Sorry to OP)

Who makes a shorter shifter (lever only) for the 5 Speeds? (MY04). Kartboy only seem to have one for the MY06+

Subaru STI makes one as well but cheaper than the 6 speed

I ordered the Subaru Short Shift Gear Lever Assy - 6 Speed - Part Number: ST3501021020 through another person.

As it looks different to the shifter asm on subaru aust website, I asked the seller to confirm with Subaru and Subaru have advised that the shifter asm I received is correct and the photo on the website is for illustration only.

Michael,
Can you confirm that the below is the correct short shifter for the lib 6speed manual

Hey thanks SpecB you're right I just checked AVO again and I have found their short shifter this time (must have been blind last time ;)). $143.00 for just the shortened shifter which does not include mechanism to change the leverage as well.

From the people who I know have fitted it, the extra effort required to move the shifter is a worthwhile tradeoff for having a tighter shift pattern. Of course if fitting the proper Subie mechanism the pattern is tightened but the effort not increased.

So the differences are:

1. Different "stick" design.
2. No rear "bush" on top image (supplied article)?

I copped a reply today from Subaru - the pic is what you get, just as Michael has said also.

I too received an e-mail from Subaru stating that the 6speed STi short shifter asm should be exactly like the picture on thier website, so I rang the 1800 # to clarify and the guy who answered couldn't 100% say if the short shifter asm on their website is for the Liberty, he said maybe its for the impreza STi :?

I'm going down to Subaru STi docklands tomorrow after work with the shifter asm to clarify.

Below is a pic of the box, it clearly states Short Shift Gear Lever Assy - 6 Speed - Part Number: ST3501021020 .

yer sorry duck. the bushings onthe kart boy kit are an extra and made specifically for the kit... i think approx US$35

to install i would say approx $100.

Subaru dealers in Perth are all quoting 2 hrs at $100-$120 and hour. One noted to me you have to drop the zorst to fit.

you have to remove the centre consol

remove the centre section of the exhaust

remove the heat sheild that sits just under the shifter about where the join from the dump pipe to the cat back is

pull out 1 clip for the reverse leaver cable

disconect the two linkages from the shifter to the box

few nuts from the cabin side

two bolts on the rear holding a mount for the shifter

and pull out and start all over again .

fun fun fun 8)

I've also just installed the OEM STi Short Shift Kit over the last 2 days. And I happily report that it is possible to do without removing the exhaust 8) .

Yes, the heat shield gets in the way a lot, since it can only be loosened - not fully removed with the exhaust still in place. And working on my own in my driveway meant it took more like 7-8h, but oh well.... I was thorough and did stuff like torquing all bolts I could to the correct spec.

The only part I decided to also replace was the rubber bush 35036AA010 Cushion rubber-gear shift (see pic below). The ST3501021020 Assembly comes with all other bushes. I don't know if the part below affects shift feel much, but it was about $40 - so I may as well do it while I have the shifter out. The old one seemed a bit loose anyway.

Went for a quick drive around the block - love it!! :D

EDIT: And I had no issues with the reverse lockout. I was dreading having to put the split pin back in, until I realised the new assembly comes with it all assembled. I probably didn't even need to remove the reverse lockout pin from the original one.
