Bump stop questions

Well.. I'm not sure.. The fronts seem to be fine.. But when I go over sharp speed bumps.. The bump from when the rear of the car hits the bump is almost painful. Like.. jarring. Not sure if that's due to the bump stops or just the springs. (This was while gf was driving, was not driving from the back seat. )

Darren, have you adjusted your driving style to suit the lowered springs? As in are you angling your approach and taking speed bumps more slowly? But yeah, could just be the rear suspension bottoming out. What version of the S.Techs did you get and where? Because Phat mentioned that Tein didn't have a non-Bilstein version of the S.Techs, so perhaps the springs are relying on Bilsteins to do more of the absorbing? But yeah, just cut the bump stops in half and see if that improves things. I'm sure if you're not happy they are a cheap to replace.

Yeah I have. I crawl over bumps, I try angling the front. but its when both wheels hit the bump at the same time that breaks my back.

I'm not entirely sure which s-techs I got. Definitely not the PHAT versions.

My car (albeit a Gen III, but same suspension design) does this and i've cut the bump stops till theres about a 1/3 of them left...
And its only on decent sized bumps when going over 60 km/h.

how are you mate? just wondering about cutting the bump stops. are you running bilsteins? just curious as i dont want to damage the shock if it bottoms out and did you do the fronts also

Talking the a guy today who services/revalves/rebuilds Bilsteins, it sounds like the shock is normally on its internal end of travel cushion before the suspension arm is hitting the chassis mounted bump stops. Reducing the size of the end stops with stock shocks will give these internal end of travel cushions more of a workout

I was talking to someone else as well about bump stops today. Can possibly get different aftermarket ones, the whole shock will rest on the bump stop and will give a more comfortable ride.

I'm going to find out more and maybe bring my car in for some checking out.

at the end of the day im sure all lowering springs will wear your shocks quicker as youl be working them out alot more, i have experienced the jarring feeling you speek of and i cut 2/3s of my bumpstops out and it is much better, i highly recommend you do it.

besides, if such a pretty car like ariths has them cut then im sure it cant hurt

ahh, but you might notice in his photos that Arith had coilovers in his car when he had the bump stops cut
