New Brisbane boy

Postby Merkin » Mon Jun 15, 2009 10:21 am

Hi all,
just recently bought myself an 05 3.0rb, an early 25th birthday present.
The car is amazing, can't wipe the stupid grin off my face every time I drive her, still thinking of a name for her though, will need a lot of thought.

The only thing I have plaguing me at the moment is the battery, was low when I picked up from the dealer and have had it go flat twice(since friday), once was after a long trip up the coast too. Charged her for a few hours and all seems fine, but every so often when I start her the clock resets to 1:00, checked the voltage, gives me 12.5 and when idling I get about 14.
Anyway think I might hassle the dealer into giving me a new one as I can't rely on this one.

Been too busy driving, so here is the only half decent pic I have that a mate took.

Welcome man. Nice beastie you have there.
I'd recommend just replacing the battery if you have concerns with it.

Welcome to the forum! Nice car you have there!

Yeah, sounds like an old battery that can't retain its charge. If you replace the battery and find it still goes flat perhaps look at the alternator. Good luck!

my guess is that the alternator is doing it's job at least passing OK if it's able to deliver 14 volts at idle but I guess (i'm no electrical engineer - one of those heathen mechanicals ) it could be unable to deliver sufficient current at higher load

Thanks guys!
glad to be here.
I think I will just get a new battery, talk to the dealer get them to give me a new one.
The day I picked it up they told me it was low and to drive around a bit to charge it up, so as soon as I got out the front gates the fuel light came on, empty battery and empty tank...thanks guys

yeah smythie that was my thought, alternator seems to be doing it's job. guess will find out with a new battery.

thanks again for the welcome

Turn on your headlights (high beam), foggies and aircon, turn up the McIntosh, and if you're still seeing 14V at idle, there's nothing wrong with the alternator.
I'd also guess you have the original battery, so it's four years old now, and probably very tired.

Just rang dealer, they are going to replace it tomorrow. No questions asked, so I guess they probably were expecting it.

Will give this a go though.

Mods will have to wait for now, at least until my bank account recovers a bit! am loving the sound, but a bit more from the exhaust wouldn't go astray!

Catch up with loweart sometime to hear how the 3RB sounds with decent mufflers. In the meantime, take the airbox lower resonator off to get some induction noise. 15-20 minute job.

Yeah would love to catch up with some guys to check out their rides.

I am more electronically minded than mechanical, so will have to look into the airbox resonator, cheers for the tip, may aswell remove the mcintosh if I start making the car sound any better

Welcome to the forums and a Happy Early Birthday to you !

Sounds like that battery needs replacing, suggest you get one of those heavy duty Century/Yuasa ones - just stay away from anything with an Exide sticker on it or made by Exide.

Hope to see you out and about driving around Brissie ! YAY, another Team Silver !! :D

Enjoy your ride !

Cheers,
Lok

OI! Easy up on Exide. I got a mate who sells them things and the trains I used to work on used 'em and they weren't a bad bit of kit. Of course, they're probably not the same quality as items you pay 2 or 3 hundred bucks for....
