Have had issues with Woolworths and Coles discount fuels, fuel disappears like there is a hole in the tank.

Here in Canberra clean fuel is a regular issue, so on the north side its Mobile 8000 from the service station at Giralang and on the South side BP Ultimate from Kingston.

Never had an issue with 'unclean' fuel in Canberra. I use the Caltex in Calwell (re-branded Woolworths caltex some time back) 90% of the time and the BP at Chisholm the other times. Do about 600k's a week and that means more than one fill up. Maybe it's more on the north side?

You'll find that's because it's a higher % blend ethanol fuel. While this helps retard detonation, it also burns a much shorter flame front so it burns faster (once ignited) and you chew up more to get the same k's. It's all about fuel mix.

theres a united in springfield they have what they call plus with 10% ethanol which is generally cheaper than the basic 91ron . I take its the same as the e10 that is above mentioned
Ive always avoided it and gone with the "boost 98"

I have used "licorice all sorts" over the life of my 03 XS Forester it feels and shows to run better on 98RON fuel compared to the other fuels.

I used to use Shell V-Power regularly until the Servo near started being a couple of cents dearer than either the Woollies Caltex or the Non-Woollies Caltex Servo's so now I use either Caltex Premium or Caltex Vortex 98, but if the Vortex 98 is anything more than 10cents different to the Premium then it stays in the ground.

Anything with eXX in the title means Ethanol. the XX number is generally the % ethanol. eg: E10 is 10% ethanol.

You'll find that any of the no-name brand fuels are brought in on a boat from Singapore and are typically full of ethanol anyway (and other fillers like toluene) to help bring up the RON rating.

Ultimately, RON means very little as it's really just an indication of detonation resistance, not how much energy the fuel can produce over a sustained burn.

Stranely enough, the yanks seem to have got it right (for once) in using MON as a value, it's a better method to show a 'good' fuel v's a 'bad' fuel.

Oh, and the real downside with all these cheap fuels is that you typically empty a tank 10-15% earlier than if you brought a better fuel. Kind of a self defeating exercise in the end.

I found this with V-Power Racing (100RON) with E5, it was always about 50k's short of what I could get with BP Ultimate 98 (these are Victorian brews of petrol where Shell and BP don't refinery share). Driving style was the same, as was daily driving path. Only difference was the Ethanol blended fuel.

I've been experimenting with Shell-95, Shell V-power 98, and Shell E10, and honestly can't tell the difference between them in the 3.0R.

Ric, is Shell E10 not equivalent or less than RON 91?

Is the 3.0 H6 (pre 2007) made to handle anything less than RON 98 because of high compression ratios?
