Not that it is of much relevance to the OP anymore, but it may be to others who find themselves in a similar situation.
I understand when the ECU is replaced the ignition key is recoded to match the new ECU, so changing back to the original ECU would require the igniton key to be recoded to suit, any Subaru service dept should be able to do this.
best to get the spare key done at the same time, if you have one.
