*IN THEORY* it increases the air opening from 30mm to 35mm, pushes it forwards to divert more air in.

However, having said that, whether it will actually make a noticeable difference is another story...

You'd be amazed what an extra bit of air in the scoop can do, esp when split evenly across the face of the IC. Can increase the efficiency a LOT leading to much lower intake temps.

EDIT: Oh, and for $400, I reckon I can get an extruded scoop made up to replace the factory item . . . . . SURELY

That's the principle of the Zero Sports Cool Action II which I also happen to have...

Interesting Clarence. Do you notice anything from a bum-o-meter perspective or anything on the dyno to get an idea of the improvement?

Cool Action II is all about air flow efficiency, not performance gains. So unfortunately you'll see no performance gains whatsoever.

Ah, OK. So why do it? Seriously? I'm not being funny, just curious to know why you'd do that mod if it made no difference to performance - performance being power, torque, fuel economy, longevity of parts etc....

By itself it's not worth it. But if you're planning a whole slew of mods, every little bit helps, no matter how little.

It'd only help if you have a larger intercooler, I guess. It's designed to distribute the air more evenly over the whole surface of the cooler. Meant to be a supporting mod, just like the ARC intercooler guide.

*shrug* it's shiny... and I got it at a good price, so I figured, why not give it a go :dntknw:

Yes, this combined with the Cool Action II should (won't say will until they're dyno proven) provide more consistent intercooler efficiency in hot and cold weather.

I did a similar pair of mods to my WRX and found significant improvements in power delivery consistency across a range of ambient temps (ie: No power sag on a 34'C day v's a 24'C day).

The other benefits really only come to the fore when you reflash/retune your ECU to allow you to run more timing/advance, boost, earlier AVC-S activiation, cleaner fuelling, etc.

The mods WILL lead to the intercooler cooling intake charge more consistently and that is only going to be a good thing on the standard intercooler.

Whether moving to an AVO TMIC is cheaper/better option well, that's a bang for buck discussion really. Both need an ECU reflash to get the most from them in reality.

I was told that the AVCS timing shouldn't be changed, as it's quite good from the factory...

I'd say that's from a tuner that's possibly not confident with moving the AVC-S timing around to get different responses from the engines power delivery.
Different tuners take different approach and use different ways to get there. Some tune against AFR (fattening up the mixture to get a little more torque, or remove det or cool the cylinders) while others tune with boost, AVC-S, timing, etc. It really depends on how smart the tuner is and how well you tell them what you want.

If you want meaty torque from down low, the tuner would be well advised to bring on AVC-S earlier to up the airflow to the turbo and bring spool on a lot sooner. Couple this with solid breathing mods (intake, exhaust) and you'll have a great little around towner with very strong and flat torque delivery.
