Warped rotors??

Postby Sentinel » Sun Apr 26, 2009 1:54 am

Took a friend of mine for a drive tonight. Braking hard from 100km/hr (coz he asked how the brakes are) and the steering wheel suddenly started juddering and the pedal pulsing (and no it wasn't ABS - I know what feels like!). So I repeated and the juddering repeated. But, it doesn't 'seem' to happen at slow speeds...

Do I have warped rotors?? Or??

Anyone else had this?

Our wagon had the same problem Sentinel so I machined the front rotors and replaced the pads and its pretty much perfect now.

Cheers.

Steve mate... I think it is time to get nuggets :)

Yes, you will need to upgrade your wheels to clear these gold nuggets, but boy are they worth it :!:

As for the warping.... how many k's have you done on those rotors and pads?

Did you have this before the melb cruise? If not then maybe you cooked them on the cruise.

You may have pad taper which feels like warped rotors. it should sort itself in a few weeks of normal driving/braking. If not then you may need to give the rotors a light machine or give the pads a rub on concrete to remove the taper.

I get the pad taper (same feeling as warped rotors) after a track day and it goes away in around a couple of weeks of normal driving/braking.

Ralph, those things are hot! :D

Steve, you were complaining of cooked brakes on the cruise, so maybe you were a bit too hard on them. Probably get them checked out, or just do what Trieu did and go the whole hog and get brembo and better rotors.

Trieu - you are a bad bad bad man! My wife gave me killer looks for mentioning the nuggets!! I've sorted my rims, and I'm pretty sure they don't fit a brembo, but I might upgrade rotors, pads and fluid instead.

Darren & 3R - yes I noticed it on the cruise. Having said that, I've never braked that hard in the lib before - first cruise, in fact, first real extended drive in it. All my other cruises have been in cars with considerably larger brakes, calipers etc. Never been on the track with this car, so wouldn't know.

If it is due to heavy braking, I'll be really pissed off. This car (which has sporting pretensions) should perform better!

I'll check in with Subi on tomorrow.

Thanks for your help - glad to hear others have the issue.

good to know it wasn't just me then!

brand new rotors, brand new pads and within 1000kms it would get a lot of pad knock and you would see where the pad would bite on the rotor and walk around until it would warp the rotors. did this three times and i just had enough. i had two pots in my MY98WRX and they where never this bad. depends on the driving style perhaps? big rotor too so that was weird, just doesn't inspire very nice pedal feel.

Stock rotors warping are a common issue with the GT. It's a combination of stock rotors AND stock pads. Change one or the other and you'll be fine.
