MY07 Tinted Taillights

Postby Arith » Thu Apr 23, 2009 3:19 pm

I've never been a fan of anything red or amber on my Liberty. So far I've managed to make everything on the car's exterior monochrome ... except for the taillights. When I began my search last year, no one had tint film for the MY07+ taillights! And I didn't want to go through the hassle of the spray paint again, because that was just too painful with the last 3 cars I've owned. It took me a long time, but I eventually found tint film made for face lifted model.

For my 1st attempt, I found the film still had bubbles and blemishes on it even after a few days of applying it. And I was too embarassed to drive around with such shoddy looking taillights and didn't want to wait for it to disperse. So I ripped off the film, and waited until I could get my hands on a spare set of taillights.

Thanks to Adam (gtspec), I picked up spare taillights last year. But didn't find the time until the Easter long weekend to work on it. After applying it, I left it for 2 weeks to let the bubbles and all the other bad things settle.

I think it gives the back a nice, subtle stealth appearance. The extra bright red from the taillights were quite an eye sore for me, so these faded the taillights into the background nicely. Although the gunmetal exhaust tips are soon on their way out, the taillights are a good match for them at the moment.

Here's a shot in the car park with the parker lights turned on, just to show that the brake lights do shine through
without issue in case anyone was wondering how much it diminished brake lights.

damn man... that looks awesome!

I know the previous owner of my car had tinted taillights on it before, although they were completely black and I thought didn't look great, but yours look sensational!... especially with so many dark tones everywhere else...

If I end up powdercoating my wheels... I will definitely be considering this!

Man - can your car get any better?!?!?! Seriously, you should have started with a parts bin and built your car rather than starting with a car and changing bits!!

Great work!!

Nice result Jim,

Tint film does the trick best as it is still glossy. I have tint spray, but it makes a flat result, so I haven't used it.

What film did you use?

I also have been looking for a clear indicator bulb (well that silver finish when the bulb is not lit) As I dont like the amber appearance of the tail light (which is actually clear, but you can see the amber of the OEM bulb.

They dont seem to make those silver coated bulbs in a large wedge fitting (that the Lib uses) instead of bayonet (Falcodore)

Said it before and don't mind saying it again but this has to be one of the best Liberty's I have seen. Looks the bollox Jim and the tail lights look awesome. I was going to purchase a set of smoked tail lights from our friends in Japan for my 05 GT Wagon but may consider giving this a go first. Do you mind me asking what film you used and where you got it from!
