Almost outa warranty time to start modding.

Postby wrxbouy » Tue Apr 14, 2009 4:18 pm

Hey all about to start the modding process in my06 gt lib, it currently has a blitz panel filter, resonectomy and a v-tune and making 150ish kwatw. Looking at getting a 3"tbe with cpitts gutted cans mod and upping the boost a bit, what is peak boost on the std turbo? (vf38?) When will i need a better flowing fuel system (pump and injectors)? Wanting to upgrade to an apexi power intake aswell.

Are you running an auto or a manual?

In the auto, peak efficiency is around the 16psi mark... Anything over that will just generate more heat but very little extra power.

I believe the manuals can safely get away with running more like 17-18psi if I'm not mistaken.

There is no need to upgrade injectors etc while running the standard turbo (Standard injectors etc max out around 210kw atws).

Also, if you looking at getting a full exhaust, I would suggest replacing the mufflers as well... The standard cans (Including STI) tend to be a restriction, especially if your going for a full 3 inch system.

Are you planning on doing any further mods?

Not sure yet how far ill go but 200atwkw is a nice round figure. Its a manual. I quite like cpitts idea of completely gutting the oem cans for pretty much 0 restriction. Idea atm is intake, exhaust, up boost (3 solonoid mbc) and retune. What figure would i be looking keeping a pretty safe tune, but still going for peak power?

good luck trying to get 200 kws atw and as mentioned you will need to replace stock exhaust with larger free flowing dump pipe, centre pipe, y pipe and a good set of mufflers. Then you will want to improve intake set up but be careful what you select in terms intake designs as some can cause you more issues with the MAF than you can effectively tune out. Once you have done this mod then you will need to install a larger and more efficient TMIC or FMIC. Once you have done all this you will ready for a tune in order to get the max out of those mods. 180 kw is the limit with 16 psi on a VF38 I reckon but would love to see what you can get with it properly tuned for those mods.

If you have $4-5K then that will about cover it I reckon, plus tuning options such Ecutek or open source.

Lol... You 100% won't get 200kw ATW's running the standard turbo (Be it manual or auto) on a GT running the EJ20T.

I'd say, if you did a full exhaust including a good set of cans, up the boost (Be it via the tune or after market controller), TMIC, CAI (IE Pod) & maybe think about a larger in tank fuel pump for top end gains... I reckon, on a conservative dyno, you be able to get around the 170ish mark with a good tune of course.

Changing to a larger turbo will allow you get obviously get more power, but getting to 200kw ATW's is not a easy, or should I say, isn't a cheap task... Trust me.

Zero restriction? Heh-heh. Good luck! You still have the dump pipe, the 2 cats, the centre pipe, and the larger centre resonator/muffler to contend with. Gutting the factory mufflers is like freeing up the flow at the END of the gas flow cycle.

With the factory turbo (we're talking the Libs here), you'll be pushing a max of about 175-190kw with intake, front mount, dump pipe, exhaust, centre pipe, fuel pump, tune, etc. Anything higher will definitely require a larger turbo as Dave and Matt (GTSPECB STI & swingn) suggested.

Yep i was definately going for a 3"tbe to the gutted oem cans, want to keep the stock look, apexi power intake pod and i really like the perrin top mount, not sure if they made one for the 2.0t though. But intake and exhaust, up boost then tune is the idea for now...As i said already pushing 150kwatw on the docklands sti dyno basically stock.

Sadly there is no Perrin TMIC available for the 2.0T... Best value 2 on the market (Available locally) would be the AVO & Hyperflow.

Apexi Pod intake it a good thing & is tried & true amoung Liberty owners.

3 inch TBE is also a good thing, but I still would suggest buying a good set of aftermarket cans just to finish it off nicely (& yes, there are cans & tips available that will make you car look stock).

Uping the boost & a good tune are also a must, but there is no way you will reach a real 200kw ATW's with all the above... The turbo just isn't up to it mate.

If you really wanted the Perrin top mount on the 2.0t, you could make it work with a bit of modification. It's been done before (Leo). However you should just stick with a direct bolt on to save yourself the hassle as swingn suggested.

Good luck! I'm sure we're all looking on with great interest. :D And that's a very generous dyno. :P

Ok just spoke to Vin @ Sti and boost has been increased slightly and tuned to make 149kwatw. So thats the baseline, plan is apexi power intake, 3"tbe and tune with more boost.... When the stimulus package comes in ill start.

that kw figure seems way too high for a stocker! Are you sure that number is at the wheels and not at the fly? What type of dyno does Vin have / use at Docklands sti ?

from memory the 2.0 T puts out like 186 kws at the fly from stock.. so to have it as 149kw from the fly after a tune would raise an eyebrow or 2!
