well i have just finished such a project.
i had a kicker 4 channel amp and a alpine sub, plus bought some boston sx60's for the front. after finding out about the ridiculous price for a new facia kit, i set about finding out about adding it to the stock headunit for the time being.
i ended up buying a line out converter (LOC) but a decent one. I got a PAC TrunkLOC for $80 on mobileelectronics.com.au which has a delayed signal to turn on your amp (no pops)
i know these arent the best solution compared to things such as JL cleansweep etc but its hell of a lot cheaper, and i will upgrade to a double din unit one day.
so installed it all (plus sound deadening on doors), wired up the LOC (just feeds off your speaker cables, i used the front which were no longer in use as i have the amp running the front) and hooked up the amp using the single pair of rcas from the loc. i wired it off the front speaker cables (even though it says to use the rear) as i wanted to keep the fader control with the stock rears running off the headunit.
all in all for the price i am very happy with the result. i thought there would be a heap more noise but there isnt. i just made sure all my contacts and splicing was sound (excuse the pun). its loud, its clear and will certainly do for the moment until i fork out for a fascia and new hu.
thats my 2c, if you have any questions let me know.
