SI - Drive Question (Fuel Efficiency)

Postby WhiteGTB » Wed Apr 01, 2009 9:43 am

Hey guys, every time I try to do this I end up switching to Sports Sharp (S#) and gunning so I gotta ask everyone else.

Does the fuel consumption vary between the drives?

Does I-Drive use least amount of fuel, then S-Drive and ultimately S-Sharp the most?

I am unable to drive a full tank on I or S Drives....

I can drive in I-Drive for well.... to be honest, down the road around the corner and then... well that button on the steering wheel gets pressed and it's fun time :)

Not sure exactly how the different modes work, but if anyone can enlighten me that would be appreciated!

everything I have read says that I drive mode should reduce fuel consumption but who in hell could stand driving it in that mode. I warm the car up in the morning until the blue light goes off and then drive in sport + mode.

The different modes only adjust the way the DBW signal is interpreted by the ecu, everything else is the same.

In I mode, you cannot achieve WOT even with your foot on the floor. That means the car is never able to shove as much fuel into the cylinders when you stomp on it as in S, but also that you'll probably spend more time on the throttle.

You also won't achieve the same boost level because boost targets are interdependent upon throttle (at least they should be - you don't want max boost at any less than WOT).

In S you are able to achieve 100% throttle and request the maximum torque (also maximum boost and fuel), but in the achievable throttle range that I mode can access, fuel consumption, power, everything except throttle sensitivity will be identical.

S and S# are the same as each other, save for the progression of the throttle.

get a tune.......

it will help with getting more from all 3 modes and also sort out the rich issue our engines have from factory.....

I can't drive mine in Sport Sharp mode, it's too twitchy and annoying. It will drop down a gear for the tiniest of throttle press and stay in that gear for way too long. Sometimes if you were overtaking the logical gear might be 3rd, but it will go into 2nd and rev to redline before going up to third - not always what you want.

I have had a v-tune so I'm not sure if that makes any difference.

If I'm accelerating hard in Sports mode and change to Sports sharp I don't notice any difference to speak of - the same can't be said for i mode though. I just drive around all day in S mode.

Get a real tune not something that Subaru offer as an aftermarket fix. You have to wonder why Subaru Australia would offer a "V Tune" at extra cost...does that mean they know the stock tune is crap?

Since mine was tuned properly I have nothing but love for the stock ecu and its capabilities. This should be your first mod full stop.

I think you will find the V-Tune is not endorsed by Subaru, (despite it being carried out at a Subaru Dealership)

In addition to this, AFAIK the "V-Tune" is identical in concept to your ASG tune Dave, they both use open ECU, but for obvious reasons the V-Tune is a very conservative adjustment of the stock maps compared to ASG's aggressive tuning

Correct me if I am wrong here guys!

The tune I'm planning for will be carried out by Paul Fisher, not a V tune. After what I had heard what is done... I steered clear of it.

Anyways... that is :offtopic:

Back to the fuel question :)

Let's start a new thread if you guys wanna discuss tunes.

I did it. ran two tanks for each (I and S).

I mode helps you get more economy, but you can achieve the same economy figures in S mode - you just have to be more careful on the throttle.

I mode helps with driveways and crawling traffic where you want to feather the throttle.
S# is ok but robs you of throttle modulation - I think. I'll have to have another drive out in the mountains again to remind myself.

I noticed it helped with modulating the throttle in traffic only... Fuel saving was about 15-30km difference btw the two tanks I ran. Same driving for both tanks, same route. But this could be down to catching several more lights, or the couple of cars I had to overtake or.... Basically, no difference. As someone said above, it only changes the position of the throttle. And let's be honest, I mode is completely frustrating!! S for daily, then S# for the fun stuff!!

I did two weeks in I mode - probably around 700ish K's. Fuel consumption form the computer said I used exactly the same as I did when using S#.

I personally find S# gives a great throttle response. I almost stall it taking off if I'm in I or S mode.

i spent a few weeks testing this out actually a little while ago, i didnt write down my figures tho...

I drive: no driving enjoyment.. cant overtake for crap but good fuel economy, mainly city and stop start driving around 400-420 / tank

S drive: pretty decent for day today driving, again, mainly city and stop start driving around 350/ tank

S#: hell awesome enjoyments, sounds awesome, same conditions, around 300/ tank

I just leave it in I and then click it straight to S# when i need some performance i dont bother with S.. lol.. if i want performance.. i want ALL of it..

the good thing also is that u get to APPRECIATE the sheer power of the car, so u wont get too used to driving such an awesome car day after day..
