Change in Service schedule?

WTF???

The oil in Subaru turbo engines contends with extraordinary underhood temperatures. In order to maintain engine-component longevity, Subaru considers all 2008 turbo-equipped vehicles as operating under severe driving conditions.

Therefore, beginning with the 2008 model year, all turbo vehicles will require the oil and filter to be changed every 3,750 miles or 3-3/4 months, whichever happens first. The policy change is reflected in the 2008 Warranty and Maintenance Booklet.

When a vehicle is driven under severe driving conditions, engine oil can be consumed quicker than under normal driving conditions. Check the oil level at every fuel fill-up.

bascially they saying that they are halfing the service interval.

funny you guys brought this up..

I have a mate at work who owned a 06 model gen4 2.5i and had some major oil issues.. He was in battle with subaru Australia for over a year with issues of the car consuming so much oil.

They blamed it on him driving the manual in the wrong manner, letting gears hold revs for too long and too high... But being the consistent guy he is, he managed to annoy them so much they eventually gave him the option of swapping the whole car for a new AUTO one or buy him out.. he chose the buy out option and bought something else..

He even had alot of posts on the MRT forum that APPARENTLY went missing but he found some some of them in the google cache search..

But he thinks now from that day they have cracked down on the oil policy to avoid future headaches with it..

Read the quote above, it only talks in miles and not km. That should tell you this announcement has nothing to do with the Australian market.

If you are using good quality oils and checking the levels there is absolutely no need to drop your oil at 5000km in a road driven car that is looked after. You would be throwing away perfectly good oil.

The problem is protecting people from their own stupidity. Should you use crap oil, not check the levels, flog it from dead cold and stop the engine seconds after being at full boost, you'll have problems.

I reckon this is the kind of person that policy is aimed at. Subaru in the US know they can't even get the average customer to lift the bonnet between service intervals, let alone take an interest in what the oil level is, what the oil temp is and whether the oil used is fit for purpose based on the kind of driving that the car is doing ... so they just shorten the service intervals in the hope that will reduce warranty claims.

I'd like to say that Aussies are more aware than Yanks and that this kind of overservicing is not necessary here, but I reckon I'd be wrong.
