So long as there are the same number of CAT's as the OEM system, you'll not be in breach of ADR's and likely achieve better results than the mfg on emissions (except maybe when cold started).

Noise is hugely dependant on everything from cloud cover to proximity to walls, etc.

Not overly surprising. EPA gas emissions are so hard to gauge, they're dependant on everything from the oil used during service, petrol in the tank to the age of the CAT's.

This creates turbulence (which is why the noises are reduced).

This (turbulence) REDUCES laminar air flow, which acts as back-pressure in the exhaust and as a result makes the removal of hot air harder.

It's probably fair to note though that a 3" exhaust is overkill for the power levels in use on the majority of cars on this forum (at least from the mid or Y section back) so the turbulence will occur, just not impact as much.

(and now waits for the hail of criticism  )

Nope - a perfectly valid point there cpitts.

I was actually going to mention the perforations inside a 'hotdog' or resonator will cause turbulence (you dont get something for nothing) but I figured we were really getting a bit technical and picky at that point. Even more picky is to say the full mandrel system will flow better than Daves welded bends - yes it would due to less turbulence again, but would any of us notice? The tidiness and 'wow' factor however is right up there with a mandrel system

The turbulence will affect the scavanging effect from a high pressure to low pressure environment, but its far less so that a baffled muffler. But its what a resonator is designed to do - the turbulence causes gasses to enter the chamber packed with (normally) stainless wool to quieten the noise

And yes a system such as this would far exceed the requirements on most cars here.

But I like the sounds of it and it certainly would be a piece of art by all accounts.

a well designed resonator doesn't have any packing by the way - it just uses it shape to reflect the sound "waves" back into the exhaust stream to cancel some out

guys if your worried about breaching ADR rules, don't mod, even adding air refreshener from your rear view mirror is in breach of them.

btw its not based on the number of cats, but the type of cat fitted.

all emmsion readings provided by all car manufactures a taken in labs where air temp and quality a all controlled.

WoW, a lot of talk about full systems etc.......

Must resist mod bug, must resist.........

Seriously, for me it's the K.I.S.S. principle and I'm looking forward to the
final product of PHAT's hard work in getting just a pair of these well thought out mufflers and quad tips. :D

cpitts, not to be rude, but ** re-edited for PG rating ** kindly get the heck out of this thread. This thread is for those who are interested in Phat's mufflers and/or the whole system.

You can discuss ADR, EPA, flatulent gases, etc all you want in another thread of your making.

You have established no credentials in this Liberty forum community as of yet, and yet all I see you do is stir up shit (ie- Phat's dump pipe). Don't want trouble from the government body? As senator suggested, don't mod. Even the HiTechs are in breach of something somewhere.

And yes, no one on this forum will probably ever reach the 500kw mark, but the mufflers are pretty quiet while still allowing performance gains. Not to mention the mufflers are still significantly cheaper than any JDM ones you'll be able to acquire these days.

Ouch Jim,

Remind me never to tick you off!

For the record I'm keen to see this final product.....I cant think of a better design than has been explained here. (both for bling and performance)

That's a disappointing response Arith. Please re-read the post and its responses and you may see that the content is not a criticism of the setup, but a technical explanation to help people understand that the unit is not going to hold them back for the power levels they're chasing/expecting AND it may even help them meet EPA requirements (both noise and emissions).

C'mon guys right or wrong we live in a democracy and everyone can have a say, a soon as we start censoring opinions whats the point of a forum.

I'm sorry, but at what point did I try to quell freedom of speech? I merely asked that he take his off-topic discussion elsewhere (ie- General). I'm not an administrator or a moderator, but I am asking for a bit of common courtesy for a thread which I started. And the thread title is 'EOI - Phat Mufflers', not 'Phat Mufflers, What Impact Will It Have On The Environment Or Government Legislation?'.

Phat may not post on the forum anymore, but he does READ it, especially this thread. I don't want anyone to jeopordize this group buy for those who are wanting to buy these mufflers, and those who have volunteered their time and effort during development.
