you may or may not be aware that the RON of any batch of fuel will degrade over time. I'm just guessing but that 100RON could be the figure that the refineries aim for in order for the fuel at the bowser to be at least 98 RON. Just guessing though....

That is correct, but I think Std08GTB meant at the bowser as all fuels have a higher RON at the refinery.

I did some testing a while back that showed BP Ultimate was definitely not 100RON, so am interested in how "good" this authority is and how long this has been the case.

Since Shell discontinued VPR, United has started selling 100RON in limited locations in Sydney and there are a few companies selling E85 in various locations also.

Yes, yes, I know all the wives tales about ethanol. Don't want to get into that, just another high octane choice. The options seem to be changing frequently at the moment.

Anyway, would be interested to know if BP Ultimate has really been changed.

why is it advertised at 98 ?

petrols are petrols and we as consumers would have no idea of what we are using..

The big companies use each others resources, they swap fuels, they deliver each others products...we put a lot of trust in these companies..

Have a mate that works there (BP) at executive level. He's so confident in it that he runs his own aircraft on it.

Went for a ride from Castle Hill to Bathurst yesterday and asked the question to a few fellow part time Australians what petrol they use and every one gave Shell the big flick over the last year .Most of the bikes were air cooled twins ? so don't know if that should be taken into consideration. The R32 is back on BP now and all feels good

Can he tell you what they've added to get it up to 100RON .. and why they still only market it as 98RON?

I mean, why would a company spend money increasing the octane rating to a market leading level and then not tell anyone?

Note: If it is 100RON, I'll switch to it.

There has long been a history with Shell premium fuels and carburettored motorbikes - back when it was Optimax.

Not sure if your mates v-twin are old carbied bikes or not, but even Shell say bikes need to be retuned to suit

I never use it in my bike, one fuel for the bike and one for the car

100% correct... But only if you talking about premium (IE - 98).

My Honda 250 basically stopped on me running Shell fuel. So now I only run Vortex or BP in my bike & it's never missed a beat

I use Shell V-Power in my Lib & it seems ok. Personally the only other fuel that I've tried (On advice from Porsche) was Mobil. Ecco wasn't as good, but the car felt like it reved out better.

back in 2002, I ran my VTR 250 exclusively on Optimax. Never had a problem with it. After the various scare campaigns that went around at that time and Triumph refusing to honour any engine related warranty claim if you had used Optimax (yes, there were big doubts on their position but there were 3 other fuels out there for me to use so...) I used the other 3 98 RON fuels in my TT600.

After continued bad running on Vortex 98 (could have been just my bike though) I used Mobil and BP whenever in Sydney. Out of town however (which about as often as in a big city) the bike drank whatever it was given. It certainly preferred the 98 RON fuels.

The Mobil and BP offerings never gave me problems. The one time I used Optimax it worked fine
