I guess what Mick (Skooby GT) is saying is, the police's radar technology can only get better and there are such things as Radar-Detector-Detectors so investing such a large amount of money on a RD now is taking a big risk.. some might say its not worth it. The best alternative is to not speed at all

technology goes both ways mate, my Escort X50 works very well on multimoney makers here in the West and as well as handheld and dash mounted radar the cops use. Cost is around $400 but the cost of a exceeding the speed limit by a few km's is over a $100 to $250. It pays for itself really.

Even with one of these new fangled Laser Radar detectors, how good are they?

I mean, most of the time the Police hide in the bush and use the new laser detectors. I would expect that the laser emission would be so small that you wouldn't know about the cop who was targeting you, until the little red dot was on your car. At that stage, wouldn't it be too late?

I suppose the moral of the story is just don't speed and you don't need a radar detector. Mind you, that is easier said than done, especially in bloody school zones in areas you don't often frequent.

Having said that, something I have long been curious about are the induction loop detectors used in fixed speed cameras. Is there a way of creating a magnetic field under your car that would bugger up the sensors?

laser radar requires a fair bit of experience and skill to get a read on a moving vehicle and I can say this from experience.

a few people i know still use it, they were popular a while back until they were banned in nsw.

i've got them on my STI...

all i can say is that i know i have been speeding on 2 seperate occassions at about 10-12 kmph over the limit..

drove past the "speed camera sign" looked at my speedo and though Fuk im busted.. fukn hell fukn hell, kick the dog etc.

No letters have ever turned up...

the operator must have reset the laser then aimed it at your plates long enough for the signal to bounce back and get a read on you. This all takes time and some skill.

When the radars have a visible "read" at 1600 metres, tell me that you can beat that? You can't actually read it at that far, and I'm not going into distances police can get at, but if you are happy with your detector great, I just think they are not wort it.

when do the cops calibrate their equipment and how often....they are so out of range/ scope / calibratrion its a joke at our expense.

quick tip : make sure the cop shows you the speed reading on the gun... if he doesnt then no case

it is a waist of money.. an they can get u on a straight run around 3km away

Range is one thing and operator's ability to read a vehicle at a distance is well and truly something else. Funny thing is I have mates who are cops and they even have radar detectors in their personal cars. Coincidence, I think not. Comments about radar detectors and their effective use are best not made by those who can't or don't use them. No different than an member here making comments about pros and cons of say an AVO tmic or particular turbo charger when they dont actually have any experience with them on their car.

absolutely correct on both points. I had the pleasure of dragging a couple of flat foot detectives into traffic court last year on just those points. Police dropped case and paid my costs
