a questions for you net folk

hey trendsetters.

nothing to do with libs sorry, but a decent discussion all the same

for those of you that spend quite a bit of time on the net this is for you guys..

im in the hunt for a new net provider... im currently on the virgin 5gb wireless, and it is shit.. the tide moves quicker than my internet connection..

i am however keeping it for when i go away with work, but am looking at cable internet, but no idea where to start..

im a heavy downloader of music and video clips, and my other half needs access to a good speed for getting on to the asx. and dont like the idea of having to leave it a week to download a few songs.

can anyone reccommend anyone, or point me in the direction of someone that knows something..

personally i would go for the new TPG plan thats out www.tpg.com.au

ADSL2 and 50gb monthly download limit for $50 a month.. bargin and i find them reliable..

i wouldnt go Cable as ur speed is greatly effected by the users in ur area sharing the same connection..

ADSL goes over your regular phone line back to the exchange, so no cable connection is required. It does NOT affect the normal functioning of your phone, and doesn't have to "dial out" at all. (You can say this about cable also.)
It is a dedicated connection, so you are NOT sharing the capacity with anyone else (as you do with cable).
ADSL (and ADSL2) does have limitations on the length of wire back to the exchange, and also some distribution boxes block the ADSL signal, so not all households can get ADSL.

Good one Ric. Also, the further you are from the exchange the slower your obtainable speed for ADSL2+. In addition, bare in mind TPG plans may have an on/off peak period for their quota, depending on the plan. Wireless providers charge a mint for sub-par speed and reliability, so try to avoid them if possible. I work in the telecommunications industry so if you need any advice feel free to PM me.

What chris said.. exetel.com.au.. I'm with them mate, d/l hardcore.. well not the last few mths.. but i do most my mates are with them.. have been for about 4-5 yrs now.. never had a probo i'm on there adsl2 plans............

so do i need to have a phone connected to run this? cause was going to try and avoid that as neither of us use it, and of course its just one extra thing to pay.

adsl / 2 ?? seem to be the way to go then hey. ??

something for me to look into after christmas.. start making some phone calls and see what i can get my self..

ADSL/ADSL2 requires a phone line yes

there is an option to use ADSL and no extra phone line bill.. its called naked DSL, but i think only 1 company is offering it at the moment and your area needs to comply with some requirements first..

TPG ftw! I'm on 50gb/50 buks plan (bundled with voip) and it is awesome for the heavy downloader. It also includes 500mins of free calls, although from my experience the TPG voip network is not that reliable

iinet is really good value.. but if you want decent customer service than you can never go wrong with http://www.westnet.com.au

im guessin both iinet and tpg nearly work out about the same, for the same.

iinet more expensive for the same d/l limits, where as with tpg its cheaper but you have to pay for the land line..

id just like to try and avoid the land line if i can. i dont want to get one just for the internet, cause thats all ill use it for, and there is the line rental fees etc etc etc... to me thats just throwing away money.

does that sound right?

like the sound of both to be honest. the both seem to work for me... and 50gm MASSIVE.. lol.. the computer wouldnt go off lol
