solved it

hey all, I tried one of the suggestions, and connected an LED up to the cable and sure enough, when i press the brake it lights up. I have a spoiler so it must've been for on the parcel shelf for non-spoiler cars.

You're damn lucky no-one pressed the brake while you had the speaker connected to it!!!
