Removing the resonator on an MY05

Hi Guys,

I was suggested to remove the resonator close to the air box to get the noise that I want. I have found a instruction on the internet and it looks quite easy. (I mean easy enough!).

Should I have any concerns about side effects by removing it? Let me know!

Bit more induction noise.. other than that.. no difference

side effects will be a bit more extra noise and

fuel consumption will go up, not because the resonator is off, but you will constantly want to be hearing the extra noise

Your K&N panel should be giving you a bit more intake noise in itself (Induction style sound). I know the Uni Filter & HKS products do.

When the resonator in my car was removed it actually made the engine louder. Air box was also a little louder.

Performance gains (If any) would be very very minimal. Only problem / difference I noted after the removal was that I got more lang down low, but I think that had more to do with the crappy MRT custom tune I had done... Basically everytime I changed something, no matter how minor (BOV, resonator etc) I started to experience a little more lag.

yea i have noticed the noise with the K&N filter. (which i know, need to replace).

not really after any performance gain from this little mod, just a bit more noise Jim suggested I do this first, before jumping straight to replacing the BOV.

yea that does suck about the lag... im sure that shouldnt happen. the good thing though, is that, if i dont like it or it causes probs, i can always just put it back on, right?

K&N is a good product. It's just that it's a oiled filter which could cause some issues. In saying that, I was running a Uni Filter which was an oiled unit & it didn't cause me any dramas over a 12 month period.

I put mine back on...I'd prefer to be 100% safe ie no chance of something flying up there , I know it is nearly impossible but there is still a remote chance... Rather than get a little bit more noise, I was quite happy just using the HKS filter...

Thought I'd let you know that I have removed the resonator! Not much of a difference, a tiny bit more engine noise, but thats about it. I had blocked off the bottom (as instructed) so I dont have to worry about anything flying up there.

Regardless, it was good fun removing that ugly tumour!

Chris, you should consider a pod filter setup. The pod filter generates quite a bit of noise during acceleration and has a 'woosh' when you let up on the gas. You'd think it was a BOV at work!

But yeah, you get the best of both worlds as the pod filter makes it a bit more responsive, but also gives off the noise you're after. An Apexi pod filter used to be had for under $200, but with the exchange rate it's probably not worth it anymore. Your best bet is get it 2nd hand, someone who has it in stock without ordering form Japan, or perhaps a different brand (AVO?).
