Engine run in?

How may k's does subaru say it takes for the engine to be run in? What type of driving style do they recommend while running in the engine?

After I complained about excessive oil consumption, my dealer said you should "drive it hard"...
I don't think my engine properly bedded in until I'd done 15,000 km.
I don't know if it needed that long, or because I didn't do a long hard drive until then.

Hey ric,i have a friend with spec b also was using 1 litre of oil per 1000ks subaru have now just replaced the short motor.

I think for the engine to properly run in, it takes about 12000 to 18000 kays, its cool when you can start to see your car loosen up and make noticable power gains by their selfs.

that many kays eh? i better drive my car a bit more than. i've had it for nearly three months now and only have 1900 kays on it. getting its first service on tuesday. i have done a bit of hard driving with it though. does that mean after i run it in the fuel consumption will get even better. currently averaging 11.6 for city driving.

as the car runs in more you will notice the engine freeing up and yes it should improve its fuel economy, even still the H6 isnt the most economical animal and 11.6 is pretty well average for city driving, i work 5 kays from my house so its gets warmed up and then pretty much turned off straight away, with the occasional longer trips into newcastle i see 10.4 to 10.6 liters on average which i dont think is to bad.

A new record for me last week.
I filled up in Tullamarine, then immediately drove through citylink.
At the bottom of the Burnley Tunnel, after 20km, my average for the trip was 7.2 l/100km, lowest long term average I've ever seen.
(It was back up to 7.6 by the time I climbed out of the tunnel though ;) )

I guess there's a fair bit of downhill in that run, even though I went over the Bolte Bridge. :)

Yeah, my usual average is 11.8 with a mix of freeway and stop-start city traffic.

I ran mine in pretty hard, I didn't 'drive it like I stole it' for the first 1000km, no constant revs, didn't overload it etc, once it had 1000km on it though it got a work out.
5 months old, 13500km. Surprisingly it didn't really use much oil in the run in (1200ml in 6000km) but it's a fair oil monster now.

I'm more sympathetic to the cars but I've run all my bikes in hard from new and none have ever had engine probs.

Geez! 11s around town?

Our current average fuel consumption in the GT is 14.6 with lotsa round town driving.

Anyone got a spare fuel card they don't want?

so how many k's roughly should you do of easy driving before you start taking it to the redline?

Depeds on your self control. 8) As stated above, I gave mine about 1000km before I really got into it.
