Why a 3RB?

Posts specific to the 3.0 litre NA H6 engine

Postby Arith » Wed Oct 29, 2008 6:30 pm

Hey! Why does a thread about the great features and benefits of the 3.0R/B have to turn into a 3.0 vs GT comparison? :?

Everyone has their reasons for picking one or the other. No need to start a war in comparison of the two. :D

Main reasons i went for the 3.0RB:

- Didn't want to go down the modification path
- Torque from idle, and even pull across the rev range, i came from a 4AGE corolla which...well, barely had any torque at all anyway, but definitely none down low.

All the other reasons were just that the 3.0RBs VS GTs in my price range the 3.0RB won every time:
- Easier to find in manual
- 6spd
- 18s look nicer than the 17s on the GT imo
- Cheaper insurance

Probably a few other reasons too, although probably only minor. The biggest factor easily was the torque though.

And the sound of that engine *drools*, oh the sound.....

The Lib was miles ahead of anything else in it's price range in my opinion (in manual, and readily available too) so it was just 3.0RB vs GT, and the 3.0RB was more for me than the GT!

Hey you turbo boys.... there is alot of love for the GT's but it ain't a straight out comparison.... me just wondering what other 3RB owners are thinking.

Thezone, you must get an exhaust... but depends on what sound you are after, I had canons and now I have quad tips, big difference. Cat back that is.

Believe me, from a previous GT owner, there is alot of love... it's like an EX, sex would be farrrking awesome, but can't stay for long

thanks for the advice Trieu but I had a cat back on a v6 honda and i swear it decreased the power (sounded good tho). I don't want to go backwards. I understand that back pressure is a fundamental requirement of how the h6 develops it's torque. What about just getting a new resonator and boxes and tips?

I used to have the Honda Legend with a 3.2 V6 and slapped on a GReddy exhaust as well. IMO the key to the catback is freeing up enough restrictions without going too big on the pipe diameter because it's NA. When I went too big, mid to high end felt terrific! However low end power suffered due to the decreased gas velocity. Perhaps that's the power loss you might felt?

So I had to change out the centre pipe and went for a smaller diameter one. That managed to restore the low end power. Lost a bit at top but it was balanced and I was happy.

I test drove a few at the local dealership before i bought my 3.0R. They gave me a 3L outback first .Then a 2.5L Lib.I think i made it around the corner and took it back.Opted for the Lib in a 3.0L after taking that for a drive. All the options came on the spec B ALTHOUGH..... Still love the first Lib GT that i was introduced to. :yahoo:

hmmmm...

- Six (6) horizontally opposed cylinders... silky smooth
- Superb handling out of the box with lowered springs and Bilsteins
- Luxury all the way, leather & sunroof big players
- Front leather seats in MY04 and MY05 are FANTASTIC (sorry MY06+ SpecB owners)
- Family duty capable
- A sheer blast when she spins up (and oh so easily). Make sure you runs 5W-40 synthetic engine oil... she revs so more freely.
- That 6 speed STI manual box!
- Handling... handling... handling

Oh and did I say handling! :D The 3RB is a real sleeper!

Cheers,

Interesting read there guys, I'm looking at the GT vs Spec B debate myself, I have ( and will keep my WRX ) so I have the turbo play thing, just after something "nice" for the journey to and from work !......hmmm,
think music playing in the back ground ! ...there's a few GT and Spec B's
around at the moment ! :? ....which ever way I go,...it's a Subie, so I can't go too far wrong.......I hope !
If you can't fix it with a hammer, then you have an electrical problem !

Handling ? Stock suspension is mushy as and prone to excessive body and the dreaded under steer roll if you ask me and yes I have driven the 3RB.

HAheheah each to their own on this one :)

I think it is relative to what you have driven and owned in the past.

If you came from a Lambo Revington then the 3RB would be a nugget, but if you came from a Kia then no doubt the 3RB is a wonderful drive.

the 3RB has nothing to do with suspension

...whats in the Spec B is identical in either the turbo or 6

there is room for improvement with the body roll in the wagon i agree...

cant comment on the sedan

Stock sways are like tooth picks on Spec B's for a start and are hollow and not very effective.
