92 Liberty GX FWD to AWD

Postby Idrempt90 » Fri Aug 12, 2016 2:26 pm

Hi guys i am new to the forum, been doing lots of research on my model Liberty as its sadly a fwd model gx 5 speed and the engine is still going strong at nearly 400000ks with the only leaks coming from the rocker covers and that pesky inspection plate, other then that the alloy intake and engine hard parts have lost some of its sheen and color but still going strong its a sedan in that nice dark maroon. Questions i have are regarding some of the upgrades, as there's not a area on here specifically for the BC series only but mixed in with gen 1 2 3 i'm alittle confused cause there are a few contradictions on what fits what models. So what ill do and please dont tell me to search cause forums are meant to help people not ignore and i have searched so just need confirmation im getting whats right for my model, and i will be turbocharging at some point but figured if i gotta remove the gearbox to fix that leak i may aswell make it awd so i only have to remove the gearbox once in the time this engine has left.

So from what i have read almost all GC8 parts will fit so what im thinking is the following.

GC8 rear crossmember
GC8 Diff Carrier
GC8 whiteline adjustable lateral arms x4
Stock FWD Liberty Trailing arms x2
GC8 Rear Hubs with Handbrake shoes and Handbrake Cables
GC8 Rear Rotors with 2 Pot Callipers
GC8 Rear Axles to what ever diff i use < will get to that in a min
AWD Gen 1 Liberty Fuel Tank from either sedan or wagon, i read there the same and mount the same
AWD Gen 1 Sedan Fuel Separator

Other GC8 parts:
GC8 Front Hubs
GC8 Brake Rotors with 4 Pot Callipers
GC8 Front Axles
GC8 Braided Brake Lines Front and Rear
GC8 Brake Master Cyl
GC8 Clutch Master Cyl
GC8 Braided Clutch line

18" SSR GTX01 not sure on what size tyres or offset i want yet

Now onto the gearbox and diff

will a GC8 STI version 4 gearbox with either 4.444 or 4.111 work and i just need a matching diff with same ratio? will a GC8 tailshaft work too?

clutch kit, the current engine is a EJ22 with cable clutch gearbox so with changing to a Hydro setup do i change to the GC8 clutch kit?

and lastly with the shocks and springs will stock GC8 front and rear shocks and springs bolt straight in? or do i have to use liberty stuff for that with 30mm low springs

hope you guys can help, Bottom line is the whole driveline i'm hoping to just take everything from the 1 model GC8 impreza from shocks to brakes to driveline and then eventually change the engine over too. gonna run a haltech elite with the turbo engine as merging and knowing what harness to pull is confusing me and i dont want to tare my dash apart.

Thanks

You'll get more specific help here for your model car: http://www.rslibertyclub.org/forums/

Most people here will tell you not to bother - too much work and too much heartache. They'll say just go buy a WRX and be done with it.

If your doing it because you really, really want to do this kind of modding project (you won't save any money BTW), then good luck.
Once again, you'll find more help in the rsliberty forum or a GC8 WRX forum. It's mostly Gen4/5 Liberty's on here.

Probably cheaper and easier to just buy a late 90s wrx.
A few years ago, one of my mates bought a few wrxs. One even had a ppg 5speed/dump pipe and a few other things the whole car was $6500 blue with undamaged gold mags like 190k kms he drove it for a few weeks and sold it to the first guy who saw advert it for $6500.
Others he bought where 99 white with white mags different turbo, turbo timer fairly stock but like 97k km was $8200 he also drove for like 2 months then sold for $7600 or something.
Before this he was paying like 8-9k. He like to buy a wrx then gets tons of speeding fines then sells it lol

Someone will probably have some parts they want to get rid off and if you can do all the work yourself then maybe conversion is better.

edit: lol i took to long explain stuff and someone else responded saying someone will say buy a wrx

everyone always says just go out and buy a wrx or a rs liberty or something like that, but it wouldn't be a project if i already got something everyone else has, its is more a self esteem build then anything else, i dont have many friends or a social life so this is my only outlet. i don't care about how hard it will be or how much it will cost all up cause im not in a rush to do it all at once. im wanting to do this stuff to my liberty because for 1 i already have the car so its a blank canvas and im a enthusiast and want to do up what i have into something unique so just wanting a little help from others. besides i don't like the look of imprezas.

but thank you for your honest opinions, i know in your eyes it seems like a no point, but its just something i really want to do and prove to myself and others that i can. so ill look into that fourm

Honestly changing any cars drivetrain from standard alignment is a massive job, I cant see why you would want to (just thinking about it gives me anxiety)
If thats the case then again buying a late 90s wrx and gutting it would probably be the cheapest option, not only will this provide the parts you need it would also provide a lot more in the long run.
If I was ever going to do this it probably be to a early 90s pulsar and put in a sr20det but would cost like 20k+ so not really worth it.

i can see where your coming from, 90s pulsars certin models like the SSS did come with sr20DE so DET swap is very common. as is all other cars that SR20s can go in.

My plan B at this stage then if it looks like its too expensive and pointless to change the driveline to impreza stuff in dribs is to just look for a poor condition liberty awd and take its driveline for now as long as its not the high low range model, at least then it will already be awd and should be easier to match up and change what i need to to make it stronger once i locate a wrecked GC8 or early model wrx. then engine wise i can always rebuild the EJ22 to run a turbo as mines a dual port to start with. just need to upgrade the internals and run a haltech elite and maybe even water meth, should be all good.
