Random garage tat you cannot live without

Nearly everything is in here to start with.
If it's about your car, or Subaru's in general, put it in "Subaru Chat".

Random garage tat you cannot live without

Postby kiahatsiu » Fri Nov 20, 2015 12:47 pm

Today I had a (not rare for me) moment of time to zen out in the garage and tinker. As I removed and refitted my plugs and fitted new coils (thanks Graeme) I thought about things that you cannot live without in the garage. The sort of not immediately obvious stuff that you use with great success when working on your car.

For me, it is a baseball cap with LED lights in the brim. It was bought for me as a kind of joke present by my Girlfriend's dad, now, pretty much every time I tinker I put the hat on and BOOM, beam of light shining on whatever I am looking at.

Great way to spend 30.00 bucks.

Tat Noun. 1. Rubbish, junk. Abb. of tatty.

Used to refer to the kind of junk sold by crafty Cockneys to unsuspecting tourists in central London.
E.g. "You can't wear that old cardigan, it's tat." {Informal}

Probably the thing I use the most when working on the car, (this week - changing the plugs, or rebuilding brake callipers, changing oil etc)

A box of tissues. Always plenty of things to clean, and I find ragz aren't as versatile. And tissues are great for a cry, if you break something.
Running no. of weeks without breaking something in the lib: 0
No. of things still to fix in in the lib: 97

Nitrile gloves!
My cars are horrible piles of crap and are generally for one reason or another covered in oil, so it keeps yours hands from becoming horribly dirty.

Coat Hanger Wire!

Anything from using as a hook to hang parts up after cleaning, suspending while painting, to forming a hook to extract that 10mm spanner that has been dropped into the engine bay.
Saves me trudging through the house with dirty feet to get a fresh coat hanger out of the wardrobe the moment one is needed.
Also comes in handy as a filler rod when gas welding.

I bought a MASSIVE roll of 'chux wipe' esque towel from Aldi for $10.00. It is very useful, but maybe not enough to warrant a trip to Aldi on its own.
Cheap baby wipes are also awesome for cleaning your hands and what not. Obviously this is a knock on from the industrial revolution, when toddlers and infants small hands were used to lubricated machinery.

When you have small children, baby wipes are suddenly used to clean literally everything, because you always have them available :)
