Stock they're a little de-tuned but with just a flash tune you can get 300kW and 500+Nm plus a cracker exhaust note out of the 5 cylinder. I reckon in a year or 2 you should be able to pick one of these up for under $50k as they're on carsales at the moment for $70k with 10k on the clock.

There's also the RS3 but these are a lot newer and may have to wait a bit more until they come onto the second-hand market in your price range.

I did look at those briefly on carsales. They do have some appeal. It's a matter of waiting so see how the market goes over the next 2-3 years. In the mean time, my lib is going strong so there is no rush.

Have you thought about a Skoda octavia rs Shav? Ticks most of the boxes I think except it is fwd if that's a concern, not sure if it has some sort of vw group trickery to help with the torque steer or not

There is a new version coming out with a tricky front diff - same as Mk7 Golf GTI PP.

If you want AWD you have go either Tiguan or Golf R.

The Passat 3.6L VR6 is a big heavy engine, and it chews fuel. Yes, it gets the car to 100km/h quickly, but the car doesn't handle well - it's nose-heavy (the engine is an iron-block unit, making the car a "lead-tipped arrow"), heavy in general, has only part-time AWD, and it only comes with the DSG gearbox, which has been plagued with issues.

I had a 2.8L Bora V6 AWD, and as much as it was a nice engine and my car had significant upgrades, including Bilstein PSS9 coilovers (replaced later with KW v2s) and upgraded sway bars, R32 Golf brake upgrade (332mm front rotors, big calipers, rears were 256mm rotors, all vented), Haldex AWD controller upgraded from stock to "blue" (more aggressive) to competition (basically permanent AWD, but without the benefits of a viscous/limited slip centre diff once it did engage), air intake mods (three to four times the cross-sectional area as air entered the intake system), I'm very much glad I made the move back to Subaru AWD and turbo induction (though my fuel usage is still a bit heavy - then again my car weighs 1608kgs with me onboard).

Thanks for the informative insight Rob. This is crucial information I needed to know. I need something with Subaru-esque balance be it a Foz/Outack/Lib. Like I said before it needs to match if not better what I have now or I won't bother. This is in terms of power, features, balance and handling. I don't have to get an off roader, but the thought appeals. The Golf R and Levorg are high on the list but not in the afford-ability range. I won't settle for mediocre because I CAN upgrade, if that makes sense. The only down side to not upgrading post lease is that I will probably end up paying more in tax which I hate the thought of. Upping my wage to compensate just means I pay more PAYG as I have a company/trust setup. The only option is to increase my budget to allow the possibility of a better car and open up the range a bit.
Cheers

I'm stuck in a similar position myself. At some stage, there will need to be a replacement to the Liberty, and I'm really unsure as to what it should be. My wife's Outback probably needs replacing before my car, and again, I'm just not sure what to get to replace it - she may end up with another Outback yet - we were considering an Audi A4 Allroad or Q5, but with the VAG-group's issues with TDI engine emissions at present, I'm not sure that's a path I want to take. She's always liked the Lexus RX range, maybe we'll look there.

For me - the Levorg isn't out until late 2016, with specs only announced mid-2016 (we still don't know if a turbo is coming, though it's almost certain that it will be CVT if it does). That may suit me, it may come too late. WRX, there's actually some interest there.

The other option for me is to downgrade my daily drive, and spend the difference on a track car. The Factory Five Project 818 car has a lot of attraction at that point: http://www.factoryfive.com/kits/project-818/

It's a tough one. I think with the Liberty's we are spoilt and we expect all cars to be as good for the price. So to have to 'accept' something else is a hard pill to swallow. The Audi's I love but if I were to go one of those it has to be manual. There are too many CVT issues I am hearing with those. It just means I have to dig deeper to get there. The Lexus is a bit of a dark horse imo. They are still quite stylish, RWD and classy. Not sure what the gearboxes are like. But Im not writing one of those off either.

You make some good points about the Levorg. Too many unknowns and to top it off its the first series of a new car. Sure its based off the popular WRX so should have most things ironed out but I'd hate to be the guinea pig should something go wrong. I cant afford to have that time off getting cars repaired under warranty.

I'd love a project car, but I just dont have the room. Not with my car and the mrs car in the garage at the moment, and she loves her car!

I still like the thought of a forester, but not the latest shape. They look weird and I dont like the front bar on them. If Subaru was to release a nicer version of that in future, I could be interested. An outback is also an idea as long as its the 3.6R model. The front of those looks crap loads better than the current shape. I dont know why didnt just stick with the same front.

In the mean time, I think I'll be keeping the lib for another 2-3 years I suspect unless something else comes up that ticks all the boxes, or Im paying far too much tax. Im just not gonna settle for the sake of it.

Well, some ass hat decided to scrape my rear bar with their car in a shopping center car park over the weekend leaving 3 substantial white gauges which are too deep to buff out. Looks like I'll be getting my paint done sooner than later. Sickens me that ppl will do this and not leave any details of their fault. :angry2:
