How much space under a-pillar trim of a Gen 4?

Postby TwistdInfinity » Tue Jun 02, 2015 9:50 am

Hey guys, I'm planning the install of my new 3-way splits. the tweeter and 3" mid are going to be custom mounted on the a-pillars.

I'm currently down to one arm due to shoulder surgery and found I was unable to get the a-pillar trim off 1 handed. I'd like to know how much room is under the trim for me to try and recess the drivers a bit, as they're going to stick out quite a bit if surface mounted in a fibreglass pod.

If you have any pics it'd be appreciated!

Even figuring out what you had to do to get the a-pillars off took me about an hour of Google searching! I can't find anyone that's done a-pillar pods in a Gen 4 let alone with a 3 way system. Most people tend to go do the sail panel with tweeter only

Put a screwdriver straight down the middle of the top of the A pillar, it will unclip the clip and it will come away easily :)

There's heaps of room down low - the room up top is all taken up by the curtain airbag.

fit some specB door trims
they've got factory spots for 3-way splits

Nah the whole reason I upgraded was because I'm sick of the door locations and was going to mount tweeter further forward on the pillars to even out the path lengths better (and I'm not a fan of kick panel mounts, never found stage height to be right . Figured I'd upgrade to a three way while at it. Planning on entering sound quality comps again, it's been about 5 years since my last haha.

Also, I'm not sure I have curtain airbags in my pillar? There's no airbag symbol or anything.

Had a go removing the a pillar trim one handed. No go. Just can't get the right angle to release the latch whilst having enough pressure to push the trim away. Looks like I'll have to wait a few weeks for the other arm to be usable

So, I got the rhs trim off using the long skinny flathead screwdriver. As was said, it pretty much just popped off. I had to push my head against the end of the screwdriver to then pull the trim off with my one usable hand.

I think I've stuffed the other side though. Yesterday when trying to use brute force to remove the lhs trim panel I think I've forced the little tab of metal that holds the clip in the retaining mechanism to raise up, so now when I push the clip down, the tab of meals is still sticking up above the retaining plate and won't come out.

I don't see a way to fix this and get it off without destroying the trim panel, a bit frustrated at my lack of patience yesterday. Oh well.

And there is a nice wide wiring harness right where I was hoping to have the rear of the mid recessed. None of my projects ever go smoothly haha

Few more pics if anyone is interested. Still haven't got the lhs trim off but at least I have a good idea of how much space is available to me now. I think I can recess these nicely and have them vent down the end of the a-pillar and in behind the dash area. If I get too much sound leakage I'll try seal them up or something.
