2003 Gen 4 2.0 or 2.5 engine ID?

Postby emilmh » Sat Apr 11, 2015 6:07 pm

Hi all,

I just bought a 2003 Gen 4 Liberty (Non turbo/NA) and believe the engine may not be the one it was advertised as. How can I confirm if the engine is the 2.0 or the 2.5 SOHC?

I have seen the VIN code descriptions but all the examples I have seen dont seem to cover all the options to clarify.

There are stamps on the engine block and also on one of the manufacturing plates which suggest engine size, can anyone confirm what engines should say what?

I have purposely not mentioned what the car was sold as and what i think it is to avoid/minimise any bias.

Appreciate any help.

The engine block itself will have ej25 or ej20 on it (cast I think). Obviously ej25 is 2.5 litres.

So just get a torch and have a look at the block?

Does it have 1 exhaust tip, or 2 (one on each side of the car)?
1 tip equals 2.0, 2 tips equals 2.5l

This is what prompted me to question what I had been originally told. It was sold as a 2.0 but as I was cleaning the engine bay I noticed the EJ25 casting on the block. Also, one of the build plates has "Engine Type: EJ252MTAHE".

I am not familiar with Subarus so I didn't want to make any assumptions.

This is awesome as I originally wanted a 2.5! Nothing like a "free" engine upgrade :D

This I did not know. I thought all Gen 4's had dual exhaust tips. Just out of curiosity, can anyone else confirm this?

Thanks for the quick replies.
