Now, to get my build thread back on topic.

When i was looking to buy headers, there was a few questions that seemed impossible to get a clear answer on;
1. Where do UEL headers make their power on VF52 turbo's?
2. What will the exhaust noise difference be?
3. What will the increase in lag be?

So hopefully i can now answer at least a couple of those questions for someone else considering it.

Its hard to tell exactly what gains i got from the headers as i got the cold air intake at the same time. However, cold air intakes are known to give approx 5kW of peak power. I gained 20kW at peak so its safe to assume they added to the peak power. I also gained no less than 10kW through the entire rev range, so its obvious that they also add to the mid range.

Exhaust noise was the biggest shocker. My car is soooo much quieter now. On normal driving and idling, it would be half as loud as it used to be... and thats no exaggeration. On WOT its still a similar volume, maybe slightly quieter, but its slightly deeper.

I saw no increase in lag over the previous tune. In fact my spool improved significantly. This would have been helped by the ceramic coating i guess. So i would say that the increase in lag information out there, may just be because people have put bigger turbos on at the same time as the headers.

I cant see this being accredited to the headers logically? I have played around with adding and removing stock mufflers on aftermarket headers and vs stock. the noise is definitely louder, not by much but not quieter at all.. and i also cant see how it would be as the level of restriction has not changed (resonators etc.) The exhaust note does change quite a lot however. I think something else may have happen here in conjunction with the headers

I can tell you without doubt that the exhaust noise has changed. From my research online before installing the headers i found quite a few instances of people saying their exhaust got quieter. I didnt believe it either, but i can tell you that the result for me was the same. I had a mid muffler put in when i wanted to quieten my 3" TBE down and that made a noticable change. The change from the headers is much greater than that change from the mid muffler.

How could aftermarket headers, designed to increase flow reduce the noise, let alone ever more so that a muffler.. designed to do almost the opposite of the headers?
As said above i did not experience the same phenomenon!

Never! haha car mechanics should be one of the few things thats not a mystery of the universe! aside from when you drop a bolt and you end up finding it meters from the scene of the crime.

The only other thing that changed was the cold air intake... and that's such noisy thing i cant see how that would make a difference.

Maybe the noise of CAI of over powering ? how come you have to go back to check bolts etc

The same could be said for the headers

I reckon it has to do with decreased back pressure.

Larger diameter and better flowing headers will remove a fair whack of back pressure

This will reduce the amount of resonance down low and thus noise

It seems to me also that Michael from msr has optimized your avcs to suit the headers, so now your engine note sounds different due to change in volumetric efficiency and thus noise levels too
