Flat foot shifting will help your manual shifts surely :)

Plus you get man status, if that any condolence. Your car also sounds better ;)
Just a big leap, itll come right!

Interesting Mick! :good:

I kinda knew you might eventually make this decision for some reason...

FFS on the 6MT makes up for it a bit - it is pretty damn good (albeit still not as quick shifting as your auto I guess).

FFS won't match 0.23 second shifts ;)

And its more the downshifts I will miss on a roll

Other thing I'm worried about is FFS not working due to auto ecu and tcu remaining

Matt if you're reading this - what does the FFS and launch control patch reference for engagement? If its clutch switch then I might be out of luck as my clutch pedal will be used for NSS wiring to the factory inhibitor switch - so don't think it will engage. Mere speculation at this stage but lets see...

Can we wire up a seperate clutch switch(or have an inline relay setup so the ECU gets a cclutch switch input seperate to the TCU?

Also... we can flash a manual tune onto an Auto ECU. No more TCU or auto logic active

Was initially thinking of switching the nss to allow engine to start. Might be an idea. Could also eliminate tcu override of avcs, cruise and abs disable in park and neutral.

Yeah I know that we can flash manual rom onto the auto ecu but problem is tcu is still expecting signals (canbus ones). I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to retain the tcu, switch the inhibitor wiring (or jump the inhibitor wiring back to tcu), series the clutch pedal to NSS, ignition key lockout and starter relay, and then also run a separate circuit for the vehicle speed sensor from 6mt gearbox to the ecu (and maybe even tcu to retain abs)

Fun times ahead

Hi Mick,
Use handbrake for the NSS.
Clutch causes issues, was a thread on LGT about the swap and clutch was no good for steady power.
CURRENT - ATP GTX 3576 - 22psi - 283.7awkw
OLD - Dom 1.5Xtr - Last dyno 254ahkw, previous 238ahkw, first 224awkw.

So a question - is there no one in the industry that actually knows their stuff

My rant:

Spoke to a few engineers about the manual conversion. A couple said it would be fine but other mods may not pass.

The third said it would all be ok subjected to a few things. Advised him the trans tunnel is different auto vs manual. Wouldn't believe me. Sent photos. Still sceptical.

So he advised it should be ok to just have customer crossmember fabbed up and certified by him if I used my original gearbox mounting points.

I made it exceedingly clear that there were many other mods on the car. Asked what the effect of that would be he said he would just certify the Gbox but would need to note all other mods as not having been certified.

Went through exercise of listing every mod.

My engine apparently needs certification even though its from a Subaru, is the same 2.0litre capacity as the oem engine, is from a later model vehicle, and did not require custom mounts or customization to fit to the chassis. (Even though rules clearly state, and even a dummy could understand, that if the above conditions are met it doesn't require certification)

Now this is the baffling part. Of all the things he's concerned about, said he didn't believe the Sti braided brake lines I have were factory. Didnt see how the bilsteins could fit my vehicle from a later model. He wanted evidence the brake calipers did not need modification to fit (after i explained twice that it was all bolt on affair). Wants to do an independent brake test to certify them.

Even funnier was he couldn't understand that the factory bov plumbed back into the pre turbo inlet pipe, and that I would be looking to replicate that system. I went to extreme lengths to explain that the above were all as per factory. Still concerned.

So the baffling thing is these guys are happy with a custom xmember to be made by someone of potentially questionable skill (not saying it wouldn't be done right but by mere fact that its not oem factory made it opens the door to further error); but was sceptical on Subaru oem issued parts being used that have not had any mods done to fit.

I also advised him the ewg was plumbed back into the dump pipe. He said it would need to be directed into the exhaust. Are we serious?

Oh and get this - my wheels (again Subaru Sti issued) which are within guidelines for size etc, would need to be independently certified for me to use them.

Mind you this is after verbally advising it wouldn't be a problem.

I really don't understand these people. The whole industry is full of crack pots, exaggerators, ill-informed know it alls without the slightest inkling of care.

Fkn mechanics, parts suppliers, dealerships, tuners, workshops - fkn everyone. They're all a bunch of imbiciles and know two tenths of jack squat.

i had a guy tell me the fuel dampeners don't affect anything. Put them back on and low and behold my lean stumble at spool up disappeared. I can sit here and list so many more contradictions I have heard from so many so called experts, that its absolutely atrocious. These people are getting paid good dollars by otherwise unsuspecting customers who entrust these people to actually know stuff.

If only I had done mech engineering to gain a certificate - then I can charge for masquerading as an expert whilst knowing nothing...

It's a sad state of affairs Mick, while I can't say I've encountered the amount of people you have, I have seen a rediculous amount of no it alls etc.
Every has there 2 cents, even those who should keep quiet.
I'm with you on the last point. I did a year of the mech eng. course, kinda wished I continued it. Everyone is an apparent know it all in that field.
Good luck with the conversion, hope you can find someone who actually knows thier shit.

It is very sad Mick. I spoke to a Subaru dealer parts guy who said I couldn't put any suspension other than factory KYB's on my 04 NA 2.5.
Best of luck finding a certifier with more than half a brain.
cheers, David

It's a dissapointing day when you speak to people you think are experts, or purport to be experts, then you end up having to do their job for them. I have found that most people in most jobs when asked to do anything outside the norm have no idea, because they just don't care. That said, what you've described should be known by this engineer as a a normal part of their job. A simple understanding of turbo function is not too much to expect from an engineer, but I know that many people (even those with turbo cars) have no idea how they REALLY work as a system.
