A FEW POINTERS FOR A YOUNG LIBERTY OWNER

Hi guys,

Before I start I'd like to apologize for any misconceptions anyone may have, as I am new to the car community and this forum.

To cut straight to the point, I'm seventeen years old and have recently purchased my first vehicle late last year. I bought myself a 2006 Subaru Liberty Blitzen H6. I've had the car for about 2 months and I cant get enough of it. The car is mechanically sound and running smoothly. The interior is like new, but as far as the exterior goes there are a few small paint chips due to the previous owner driving it mostly on highways. With its large amount of highway driving, unfortunately came quite a few Kilometers on the clock (close to 300 000 km's). I am a little concerned about this, and should I be? Should I be looking at selling? or even engine re-build when it starts to give me problems?

I would like to do some minor performance and visual modifications to the vehicle, but I'm unsure of what would be of most benefit. As I am a student and on my provisional license here in south Australia there are obviously boundaries and limitations when it comes to mods.

I'm looking at getting some STI rims for it as the stock ones are a bit fruity. Where can I find some cheap?

I would greatly appreciate some ideas and pointers as far as what to do in the future. I have attached a few photos below.

Welcome to the forum mate.

Subaru engines are generally very reliable and can last several hundreds of thousands of kilometres if treated well. As with any vehicle, regular servicing and maintenance is the key. Most of us would service (change oil/filter and conduct Upper Engine Clean) every 5-8000kms, despite the Subaru Service interval being 12,500kms.

I personally have limited knowledge of the H6's, but one main point to note is to constantly keep an eye on the engine oil level. They are known to burn a bit (especially at high km's) and if you let it get too low, the results can be catastrophic.

As far as bang-for-buck performance mods, they best thing you can do IMO is exhaust and ECU re-tune.

The Blitzen wheels are definitely to be desired. STi rims are a good choice, though often exxy. Rota Gravel's are a good alternative, being a replica of the STi wheels. They are slightly more agressive specs while not going over the top.

Nice ride! As long as it's had the right servicing and you don't run it low on oil, it should have plenty of life left. In any case, drive it until it dies! It's relatively affordable to get replacement engines.

You can get STi rims cheap from Frank's auto spares, you need to make sure the complete idiot is working on the front counter and you can get them for $700. Other than that you will not find them cheap at all, but you can get rota gravels (which are copies) for about $1k.

Good starting points are LEDs+HIDs, grille replacement/DIY, anylink bluetooth or a headunit replacement, upgraded pads/rotors, upgraded sub, amp sub gain mod. Also a KiDO tune and some E85 will give it a nice boost. That should keep you busy for a while!

As others have said, over-service it. Get it done every 7-9 months or 6-9,000kms and it should last so I'd first recommend finding your nearest Subaru specialist mechanic and having it checked out/serviced. Reliable and strong engines, but they do need their maintenance.

I also concur with the headers/exhaust and re-tune, you'll love it after these mods. Check out Raptor headers (they are a vendor here).

As for the Blitzen wheels, I think they are desired so if you did want to sell them you'd probably get a good price. Can't go wrong with Sti wheels although they aren't cheap, keep an eye on the sale threads as they pop up every now and then.

The manual is the way to go
My exhaust is a custom made 2 1/4 stainless steel system, it was on the car when I bought it so I'm not sure how much it would cost though

Welcome Unfortunately you can't really get the Subaru dak dak due to it being a 6 cyl but I've put a catback on mine and reckon it sounds awesome! (Check out the exhaust sound thread) I laugh when I go down the street and everyone turns expecting a Porsche and gets stuck looking at a Subaru ahah.

You might have to do a bit of research into front lips as I'm not to sure much will fit your bumper

Yeah I had come to the realization that the rumble was unable to be easily achieved after doing some research (damn) but will definitely look into a catback very soon! either way I'm sure it will sound half decent. As far as the lip goes, yeah I'll have to keep an eye out for something as I'm not completely satisfied with how it looks at the moment (not priority). Fantastic photography by the way, keep it up.
