Brake upgrades for Gen V

Postby JakeC » Sat Dec 13, 2014 6:50 pm

Hi guys,
Had my GT for 2 years now and I've got a bit of disposable money that I wanted to put towards some upgrades. Recently purchased some new wheels and I'm thinking my next point of call will be brakes. I'm not too knowledgeable and was wondering if anyone could give me a good idea of where to start, ie rotors/calipers/pads. DBA T2 or T3 seem to be popular with Intima SR pads, what kind of calipers are popular with GT drivers? I'm looking for a solid improvement to performance without going too high level/breaking the bank. Also want to improve the looks a bit now I have more open wheels .

Also if there are any recommendations for suppliers or people to do the work in Brisbane it would be appreciated!

Cheers

2 options

08+ STi Brembos will offer a significant increase in braking power all round, even on stock pads and rotors.

Other option is upgrading the fronts only with aftermarket calipers like I did.

If you're not really driving it super hard and you don't want to spend a heap of money, imho the best option is to go:
  • Intima SS or QFM HPX pads
  • DBA T2 rotors
  • Braided lines
  • Painted brake calipers in whatever colour you prefer, with/without decal.
and obviously some new quality fluid.

This will give you a much better braking system without breaking the bank!

If you're wanting to replace them with something high performing and good looking, the brembos are the obvious option. There's also a bunch of other big brake kits, (kido and shockworks, some others I am forgetting). These are better for sure, but it's unlikely you'll need that much braking performance.

I have proceeded similarly to this post and bought a set of Brembos from an MY12 WRX STi on my Gen V which is modelled on the tuned by STi Gen V in the JDM. They look and perform amazingly, will post some photos.

Since fitting I am getting the orange VDC and orange park brake warning lights coming on? They don't come on when I start, just after a bit of driving - may depend on when I am braking hard..ish...is there a compatibility problem with the ECU and this kinda upgrade?
Mods
STI exhaust, wheels, springs, flexible tower brace, front lip spoiler
Whiteline anti-sway bar
EcuTeK remapping
K2 Gear full duel centre pipe
Invidia high flow cat and dump
Crystaleye front headlight

If you prioritise braking performance over looks, what Matt said ^^^

If you want both braking power and some nice bling behind wheels, and prepared to spend a few gs, then brembos. I went the fronts first (plenty of braking power), and then couldnt resist and had to get the rears done to balance it out

I got T3 4000 slotted rotors
Fronts: DBA4654-10S
Rears: DBA42656S-10 (you need to cut/remove the dust shield)

Note the 08+ brembos rear calipers are a straight bolt on, but were quite expensive at the time. I ended up getting pre-08 rears and adaptors from Mark (cruisn) to make them fit the MY10.
